“Whew,” Shani mutters and flops down on the sofa. “I don’t know how Teri and Patrick do it.” She throws one leg up on the ottoman and sinks into the cushion.

“They wore you out, huh?” I take the seat next to her and pull her other leg into my lap.

She’s been barefoot most of the night, and though she didn’t sign on for the amount of work that came with babysitting, she hung in there. So this—massaging her aching feet—is the least I can do.

“No, Caleb. You don’t have to—”

“Shh. I’ve got this,” I deadpan.

Shani shrugs in surrender and settles into her seat, her eyes closing the moment I apply pressure to the arch of her foot. “Ohhh. That feels amazing.”

“Yeah?”

She nods through a moan, her eyes still shut.

“Thank you for joining us tonight,” I say after a while.

She looks at me, a lazy smile hanging from her lips. “I love those kiddos.”

“They are pretty great,” I agree. “So what about you? Do you want children?”

My question must make her uncomfortable because she shuffles in place, rolling her shoulders and dropping her gaze to her lap. “Someday, yes.”

“Did you and your ex ever make plans for a family?” I pry.

She shakes her head. “No, he didn’t want kids.”

“Wow. And you were okay with that?”

“I told you, things were complicated with him. But had we stayed together, I probably would have gotten on board.”

“Hm.” I nod and deepen my pressure on her foot.

Shani’s head falls back, another soft groan leaving her lips. I stare at her, my cock twitching against the stiff fabric of my jeans. God, she’s so fucking beautiful.

“That can’t hardly be fair. You were going to just give up on your dream of being a mother to satisfy him?”

Her eyes flicker open, and she narrows her sights on me. “Isn’t that what love is about? Compromise?”

“Not at the expense of your own happiness,” I combat.

“I guess you’re right about that. What about you and Emma? That’s her name, right?”

I silently let her know she’s correct.

“Did you two plan to have children?”

My nerves get the best of me, and I fight the urge to avoid this topic. Emma was the only woman I’d ever planned a future with, and that’s over. Now I’ve found Shani and I don’t want to ruin our mood with stories of Christmases past. But I answer anyway, despite my desire to change the topic altogether.

“We wanted a large family. At least five kids.”

“Whoa. An entire team.”

I shrug with my lips pressed tight, half expecting her to continue to fish for details. But she doesn’t. I don’t know if it’s because she’s gotten all the information she needs for the night, or if it’s the sound of Pat and Teri driving into the garage that halts her interrogation. A second later, the side door opens, and Teri’s voice booms through the bottom level of the two-story house.

“We’re home.”
