It was in a subdued frame of mind that Felicity made her way to dinner that night. She felt almost as weary as she had after Justin pulled her from the lake, and she wished she could hide away in her room with a tray. Not that dinners with Justin were unpleasant lately. Quite the reverse. He’d even stopped asking his old nightly question, so she had no awkwardness to dread.

But the confrontation with Kurt had shaken her in more ways than one, and she wasn’t entirely sure how to face Justin. She was grateful to him for his intervention, but at the same time humiliated that it had been necessary. She’d been dealing with unwanted attention for years. Why did Kurt get under her skin so much?

But she knew why. It was for the reason she’d told Justin. Being accosted out on the street was one thing. Being pursued into your home, where you were supposed to feel safe, was something else altogether. She’d always hated Kurt being allowed into the cottage. She’d felt just as uncomfortable about his presence in the castle, only a stone’s throw from the door of her suite. Her own reaction had made her realize how much Justin’s castle had begun to feel like home. And she wasn’t sure how to feel about that revelation, on top of everything else.

Fortunately, Justin not only refrained from mentioning Kurt, but made considerably more effort than usual to initiate trivial conversation. Felicity was just starting to feel relaxed again, when the sound of raised voices made both of them pause.

Felicity glanced apprehensively at Justin’s face. He looked disapproving, and she wasn’t surprised. In all her time at the castle, she’d never heard any servants argue like that. Before either of them could take any action, the door opened and a wide eyed chamber maid hurried in.

“Your Highness,” she said breathlessly, although her eyes flicked to Felicity. “There are three more visitors looking for Miss Felicity, although I don’t think they all know each other.”

“Three?” Felicity leaned her head back, willing herself to remain patient. She was too weary for this. “This is getting ridiculous.”

“I think one is another prince,” said the chambermaid, sounding torn between nervousness and excitement.

“Another prince?” It was Justin who repeated her words this time, and a glance at his face showed that he looked as irritated as Felicity felt. He met her eyes, his expression difficult to read. “You’re making quite a name for yourself with the royalty of Solstice, it seems.”

Felicity groaned. “Not by my choice, believe me.” She cast a long-suffering look at the maid. “Do I need to come and fetch them? I suppose no one can direct them to me.”

The maid glanced behind her. “Well, they seemed to be coming this way. If I leave the door open so they can see the light from the fire…”

It was obvious why she had trailed off. The arguing could still be heard outside, and it was definitely getting closer. Felicity gave her hair a cursory pat, unable to hold in a sigh.
