I pedalled to Nan’s – risky when I was avoiding Yasmin, but I had to. Dolly Parton was playing through the crack in the small front window; Nan would be in the kitchen with an apron on. Instead of going through the front door, I went straight round the back to Rabbit’s hutch; the door to the hutch was open. Not unusual. Most days she hopped round the house, so I went inside.

‘Oh, love,’ said Nan, holding the phone. ‘I was just calling you.’

My heart rocketed to outer space. ‘What?’

‘It’s Rabbit. She’s ready to go heavenwards.’

Nan followed me into the lounge, where I found Rabbit. My baby. My best friend. She was on a ‘powder-blue’ cushion in the middle of the room; the coffee table was pushed in front of the pale yellow display cabinet to give her space. She hardly moved. It made my heart hurt. I dropped beside her and drew the cushion close, resting my hand on her yellow and white fur. The old-fashioned gramophone sounded too loud.

‘Can you turn that off?’ I asked.

The track scratched to a stop.

‘Here.’ Nan popped a spare cushion under my head, placed a box of tissues next to me and left the room, quietly shutting the door.

I stayed with Rabbit till her breathing stopped.
