West draped his arm around my shoulders and strode forward with purpose. We were like two soldiers heading into battle. Our tattoos were our armor, our fists were our swords, and our minds? Well, I needed to get mine out of the gutter after the kiss we’d shared.

“Remember what I said,” I reminded West as we headed towards the poker room. I played the role of nagging girlfriend so perfectly that no one would guess I’d never had an actual relationship before. “Don’t do anything stupid.”

West scowled. “I’m not on your fucking leash.”

“You are tonight,” I said. “I’ll even put a collar around your neck if it’ll help.”

After his earlier outburst, what the hell had he expected? I’d brought him back from the brink of eruption! I hadn’t thrown myself into the fire for him to ruin things. I’d do whatever needed to be done to stop the night from turning into a bloodbath.

“Be careful, Pinkie.” West shot me a warning glare, making me tingle in parts that should be unacceptable in a public place. “You wouldn’t want to make me angry again.”

We passed through the gigantic wooden doors. A full forest would have had to be cut down to construct them. Somehow, I doubted sustainability was high on Bryce Briarly’s agenda. Beyond them, an impressive room with a domed ceiling had a poker table positioned in its center.

The crowd parted for us to make our way past. West’s little performance in the library hadn’t gone unnoticed, and no one wanted to get on the wrong side of the scary tattooed beast. Hell, I didn’t blame them! Those people may have seven zeroes after their bank balance, but they couldn’t buy a backbone.

At the table, players had already taken their seats. A black rope barrier around its edges separated them from the swarm of onlookers.

“Right this way, Mr Parker.” A guard manning the border opened the gap for West to pass.

Before he went up and over the front, I caught West’s arm.

“Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do, honey!” I simpered for the benefit of the guard, but my stare was laser-focussed. Hopefully, West could read me well enough to understand the underlying threat behind my words. “Good luck!”

“Don’t miss me too much.” West bent down to kiss me roughly on the cheek. He almost had me convinced until he added menacingly under his breath, “I don’t need your fucking luck.”

West spoke too soon. As soon as he took his designated seat at the table, Giles pulled up a chair opposite. The two of them sat eye to fucking eye with locked jaws. All I could do was hope for the best because we were past the point of a make out session saving the day. From here on, I needed to trust West to keep his cool. We had a plan, and we needed to stick to it.

As we’d agreed, I circled the table to get a read on the nine other players like a shark planning a strike. The men came from all walks of life, from stuffy politicians to obnoxious business executives.
