‘A man picked you up from school?’ Cheryl was in before Gabby could even form the words.

Faith stared up at her gran who was still crouched down at eye level with her. Her eyes widened even more. The strand of hair she had been curling was now tight around her finger and looked as though it was about to cut off the circulation.

‘It’s okay, sweetheart, we just need to know who he was and what happened,’ Cheryl soothed, though from her face I could see she was far from soothed herself. Her eyebrows were drawn over her eyes and she was biting at her lip.

Gabby tried to gain control of the situation. ‘You’re not in any trouble, Faith. You’re doing fine. Let’s keep going shall we?’

Faith just spun more hair around her finger.

‘So, who was it that picked you up?’

Tears pricked at her eyes and she crossed her legs. She was getting anxious. We couldn’t carry on much longer but neither could we stop before we knew that Faith had not been harmed.

‘I don’t know.’

Cheryl took in a sharp intake of breath and a hand shot to her chest. How would Gabby ask the next question?

‘Who did school think he was?’ Good call.

‘A friend of mummy’s. He was a friend of mummy’s. She was late so he came. I knew if the teachers said he was mummy’s friend then he was because mummy said to always do as the teachers said.’

Cheryl opened her mouth and I shook my head. No matter what she was going to say she could say it to us later not in front of Faith. We didn’t want her afraid and to clam up. But from the way Cheryl’s face had drained of colour I didn’t think Lucy knew any males she would trust to pick Faith up and would usually rely on her mum.

‘What did you do with the man?’ Gabby pushed on. From school to the time Tyler was hit was several hours.

Faith shook her head and tears started to roll down her face. We were upsetting her. Cheryl looked terrified. She stroked Faith’s hair again.

‘It’s okay, Faith, you’re doing really well. You can go back to your room again in a minute. We’re nearly done.’

A quick nod.

‘We went to his house. He let me watch CBeebies and I had a sleep on his sofa.’

‘Then what happened?’

She unravelled her finger from her hair and started all over again with a fresh lock. ‘He took me home.’

‘Do you know what time it was, Faith?’

She shook her head and bounced on the spot a little. ‘Mummy put me straight to bed. She said it was late. I heard her crying before I went to sleep. I don’t think she was very well.’

Cheryl was twitching. She couldn’t keep still. She rubbed at her head, rubbed at her arms, adjusted her clothing, shook her head multiple times and gnawed on her knuckle.

‘You’re doing well, Faith. Thank you for talking to us today. Can I ask you one more question?’

Faith nodded again.
