During the evening, Mélanie Claux and her husband had been transferred under a false name to the TimTravel, a relatively new hotel located a hundred meters or so from the Bastion. A light, spacious junior suite had been placed at their disposal. Before going to bed, she walked around restlessly for a few minutes, hesitated, then couldn’t help but look at the dashboard of her channel. YouTube produced the statistics automatically.

In pride of place, her new video appeared on the first page, along with the following comment.

“Your latest video has been performing exceptionally well!”

Given the circumstances, Mélanie was perfectly aware of the absurdity and violence of this machine-generated comment, but she couldn’t stop looking at it.

Undeniably, Happy Recess’s other videos had been given a boost by the sudden spotlight on her site. The light had turned green for all her data: in the last twenty-four hours, the audience had grown by 24%, viewing time by 23%, and income by 30%.

In bold capital letters, the platform sent its compliments: “Great job! Your channel has had 32 million views over the last 28 days. Congratulations!”
