Chapter Six

“Can I have some seeds to plant in front of my cabin?” Kelly asked on Tuesday afternoon. She’d just got back from Liz’s.

“What type of seeds?” Mum asked.

“Flower seeds.”

“I planted wildflower seeds in the front yard. I think some are left.” Mum looked in a drawer. “Here they are. You’ll need a trowel too.”

“What’s a trowel?”

“It’s like a small shovel. You can dig with it.” Mum handed it to Kelly.

“Thanks, Mum.” Kelly ran down the back walkway and along the alley to her cabin.

Before she started planting, she looked around. The black and white dog wasn’t in sight.

There were weeds in front of her cabin. She pulled them up. The ground was hard. It took all her strength to dig a hole. She didn’t mind. She was a pioneer, and pioneers had to work hard.

She looked over her shoulder. Between the two trees, she could see her farm. The grass and weeds seemed taller than ever. Kelly smiled. The crops on her farm were growing.

She went back to work. She dug another hole and another. Then she heard a scratching noise beside her. She looked up. It was the small black and white dog. Winnie was digging holes just like she was. Kelly laughed.

Winnie cocked her head. Her black ears pricked up.

Kelly gazed at her. Winnie had big brown eyes. Her face was white, except for a black patch on her left cheek and a black ring around her right eye.

“You look like a clown,” Kelly told her.

Winnie cocked her head even more. She seemed to be trying to understand what Kelly said. Then she went to the cabin door and sniffed.

“Do you want to go in?”

Winnie sniffed some more.
