Blocks
There are six basic blocking movements. If you learn all six correctly, you will be able to use them to block any attack that your opponent throws at you. They are: 1) upward, 2) downward, 3) from the outside in, 4) from the inside out, 5) straight, and 6) circular. Any block that you perform against an opponent has to be a form of one of these. Many of these variations use the same arm movement, but different parts of the hand and arm to block. Let's see how they work.
RISING BLOCK
The rising block, age-uke, may be performed with a variety of hand positions. Normally it is performed with a fist, as shown in the illustration. The rising block is an upward block and is used to deflect a punch aimed for the face. This block is also useful when a strike is aimed at the head from an above position, such as a blow with a stick. In order to have enough strength in this block, the blocking arm must be bent at about an angle of forty-five degrees, with the hand higher than the elbow. You must take care not to have your arm too close to your face, or your opponent's attack may force your blocking arm to strike your face. Since the block is designed to deflect a punch upward, the upper edge of your forearm must be above the level of the top of your head.
