âRememberâonly bring the necessities!â Betsy called out over the noise of everyone digging through bags. Betsy, who had become the unofficial leader of this trip, was put in charge of food and water. They were down to a single bottle of water to share between them, but Kendell and Betsy were both hopeful that they would locate the watering hole early that morning.
A slight scuffle of mostly words broke out when Joe tried to put his camera in his backpack, wasting space. Mika was the one most perturbed by this. âYouâre the only man here, and youâre obviously stronger than all of us. You canât be wasting space in your bag with a stupid camera.â
Abby perked up. âThis is our livelihood,â she argued. âWe need the camera.â
âYou really donât,â Tonya said. âPlus, itâs getting on everyone elseâs nerves. We need that large bag to carry rolled up tents.â
âFine,â Joe said, and Abby looked mortified. âIâll use the bag for materials we might need, but Iâm still bringing the camera. Iâll just carry it if that makes you all feel better. I can carry it. If I get too tired to carry it, Iâll ditch it.â
Abby looked mortified by that as well. âYou canât ditch that in the middle of the outback. Think of all the footage weâve gotten.â
âAre you for real?â Mika asked.
âThis is my job, so yeah, Iâm for real,â Abby said. âThis is going to be a good story, and Iâm right in the middle of it. Thatâs gold to people like me.â
âOkay, everyone, thatâs enough,â Betsy insisted. âJoe, if you want to carry it, you can carry it, but theyâre right. Youâre the biggest one we got, and youâre going to carry a fair load of supplies. Letâs get going.â
âDo you even know where to go?â Mika asked. âIâm starting to feel like weâre going to be walking in circles again. Thatâs what weâve been doing since we left our campsite, at least.â
âWe havenât been going in circles,â Betsy argued. âAnd Iâve got a map now. I was able to pinpoint about where we are, and I believe there is a large watering hole not too far from here. If we can get there, we can cool down, take some time to boil some water, and I am confident I can get us to Uluru from there.â
âWhat happens if we miss it because youâre off by a few miles?â Abby asked.
Betsy nervously tugged at her shirt collar. âWell, we could wind up walking right past Uluru and end up lost in the outback, if Iâm being honest.â
âPerfect,â Abby snarled.
âHey!â Kendell called over the group. âGuys, Betsy is doing the best that she can, okay? I donât see any of you coming up with any better ideas. So, letâs get going. Weâre behind you, Betsy.â
Betsy smiled. âThanks, Kendell,â she said, and after checking her compass and map one last time, they began walking.
Pauline was given a light load to carry, and Dot walked right beside her, panting most of the way.
