Albina closed the kitchen door as she came in the back way. Knocker was seated at the table, a half cup of coffee in his hand and his Glock resting on his lap. She looked at him and said, “How is the coffee?”

“It tastes like shit.”

“You don’t have to drink it.”

“You don’t have beer,” Knocker informed her.

Albina snorted. “You military men. Beer and coffee.”

“Don’t forget women.”

She winked at him. “How could I forget?”

“Did you set up the meet?”

“Yes, later today. We will meet—”

A noise from outside stopped the words in her throat. Albina crossed the small kitchen and out to the front room. “Shit.”

Knocker came to his feet. “What is it?”

“Some of General Orov’s men. They must be checking for contraband.”

“Contraband?”

“Yes. Weapons, ammunition, explosives. Anything which will lead them to the resistance.” She stopped. “Quickly, help me move the table.”

Knocker helped her shift it off the rug. She then peeled it back to reveal a trapdoor. Albina pulled it open and said, “Quickly, down here.”

“You’re kidding?”

They heard knocking on the door. “Now.”

Knocker climbed down into the concealed area as the banging on the door grew more urgent. Albina replaced the mat and pulled the table back into position. “Now, be quiet.”

Knocker made sure his handgun was ready to fire and waited for things to turn to shit as they had a habit of doing when he was involved. He heard the voices, then the footsteps. The voices grew louder and then they were in the kitchen.

“Search the house,” an authoritative voice snapped.

“What do you want?” Knocker heard Albina ask. “You still haven’t told me.”

“You were seen with a man early this morning while it was still dark. Both of you entered the house. You were armed.”

Albina threw her arms in the air. “What an outrageous accusation. Who said this? I demand to know.”

“Are you denying this?”

“Denying? Of course, I’m denying—”

A crash cut off the end of the sentence. “Can you tell your men to be more careful?”

“Are you denying that you were with a man?” the officer asked.

“No, I’m not denying that.”

“So you were with a man?”

“Yes,” Knocker heard her say. “A single woman has needs. I can prove it if you like? Would you like to smell my sheets?”

The former SAS man grinned.

“Where is he now?”

“He left. I only wanted to fuck not marry him,” Albina said with sarcasm.

“Keep searching,” the officer snapped.

“Oh, come on.”

“What was his name?”

“Why? Do you want him too? He wasn’t that good, actually.”

“Damned whore,” the officer hissed.

“If I was, Comrade, I would have all your money.”

The officer spat and Knocker heard heavy footsteps on the floorboards. “Let’s go. I’ve no time for whores.”

Several minutes after the front door was slammed, an eerie silence settled upon the house. Another minute or so of Knocker wondering what had happened, he heard the table scrape on the floor rug until it was far enough to fold the rug back and reveal the trapdoor. The trap opened and Albina stood over the opening. “Come on up. They’re gone.”

Knocker climbed out and grinned at her.
