Chapter Twelve

"How much does a private investigator cost?" I was at the family table and it was

Christmas.

"Why ever would you need a private eye?" asked Darren. He extended his well muscled

arm across the table for the bowl of rice.

"Oh it's just it bothered me in a book I was reading. This poor chick hires someone to find

something out and it seemed to me that you'd need a lot more money than the character has."

"You can count on Holly to find all those plot holes." Wyatt said. It was a little strange to be around him, but not terribly. I had been making a special effort to keep in touch not just with him but all my bros. It was one of those times I really needed to know there were people who

loved me. "A PI can cost $50 an hour and up plus expenses. But it depends a lot on what you're looking to find out. Private eyes are best at spying on people. I hire other people to dig into

records."

But I can do that myself and can't turn a thing. I wanted to ask him who he'd hire. Who

are these other people? How do they find out what happened to a woman ten years ago when

there isn't a thing about her anywhere?

I also wanted to ask him how someone erases his tracks. It's easy for me to do because

I'm basically a nobody and my given name isn't what I go by. But Wyatt was an expert on it and

apparently, so was Lance.

The story of their marriage began and ended with a public record. I couldn't even find a

wedding announcement or anything in society papers or you name it. But I just said 'oh' and let

the conversation go where it would. I couldn't come up with a graceful way to ask them how

they'd handle a situation I had told them nothing about.

Yes, I'm secretive like that. The rare occasions I have brought up 'seeing' someone has

led to disastrous invasions of my privacy. Of course, it's natural that they'd be interested. We all loved to dissect each others' love lives or lack of them. So I backed off.

We went on to discuss the usual. Or rather, I listened to the Soul family discuss their

favorite thing. I was grateful to help Sarah in the kitchen just to get away from all the sports.

"How's life in the Big City treating you, Holly?" Sarah always seemed a little tentative around me. I don't think it's because she looked down on me. Maybe in the distant past, but we

were all over that. I think it has more to do with the fact that she just can't imagine what I've been through, now that she knows. Her life was relatively pretty. Far as I know she never faced much

hardship until her father died and even then she got very, very lucky. Then she got double lucky

by winning the heart of one of the biggest hearted guys I know.

The Soul family had done a very good job of keeping our little secret.
