Chapter Seven

Seth

I roll onto my back and let out a sigh. It’s been about a week since taco night over at Billie’s, and tomorrow is the day when her parents are supposed to arrive. I don’t know why I’m nervous, I’m not the one who has to meet them, but Asher’s sleeping soundly.

And I haven’t been able to sleep a wink. I don’t know what it is. Worry for Asher? For Billie? For both of them?

Or is it the same shit that’s been keeping me up every night?

I haven’t been able to stop thinking about what Billie said, about finding a man like us. For some reason, the idea of her in another man’s hands bothers me, and I don’t understand it.

Ever since I was fifteen years old and I met Asher Bennett, I’ve been convinced that I’m a gay man. I’d never felt anything like the pull I felt towards him, about anyone. I’d never had much interest in girls, but to be fair, it’s not like I was lusting after other men, either. It was just…Asher. I knew, deep down, that he was meant for me, on some instinctual level.

So to have these weird, possessive, jealous feelings about someone else, especially a woman, is confusing the hell out of me. I love Asher, that hasn’t changed in the slightest, but that doesn’t stop me from thinking about that curvy beauty next door.

I sigh and carefully climb out of bed. I don’t know why I’m so cautious, Asher sleeps like a rock.

I close the bedroom door behind me and head downstairs. In the living room, we have an upright piano, and I settle myself on the bench and lift the cover. I know with the door closed, the noise shouldn’t carry, but even so, I at least start out pressing the keys gently to keep the tune quiet.

It’s my oldest habit, I’d started learning to play when I was about six, on a school piano. All throughout my school years, when things got bad, I’d break into the music room to play. At least until high school, when I befriended the teacher and he’d started leaving the door unlocked, so I could come in and enjoy a little music therapy whenever I needed it.

It’s the best way in the world to clear my head. I focus in on swirling notes and the music drowns out my worries for just a little while. The longer I play, the more I forget myself, and I realize that I’ve pretty quickly abandoned any attempts to keep the noise down.

But the deeper I lose myself, the less I notice my surroundings, and the music consumes me until I feel Asher’s arm around my waist and realize he’s sitting beside me. “Sorry, babe,” I murmur, dropping my hands from the keys, “Did I wake you?”

He shakes his head. “No, had to use the bathroom, but I came down to check on you when I realized you weren’t in bed. What’s on your mind?”

“Nothing important,” I mumble, leaning my head on his shoulder.
