“I don’t know yet. I need to link him to Taylor during that time, which I’m not sure I can do. But I can see if he’s ever been in this town. If Sarah hasn’t left in the forensics department, please buzz her for me and get her to make some more phone calls tonight if possible. Tell her to call in some favors. I need anything and everything on that guy.”

“Yes, sir.

“Just yes will suffice.”

“Sorry Stearns. Will do.”

Stearns grabbed the paper and raced back to his office. Since he has already called Chief Roberts, he dialed the number for Mr. and Mrs. Williams.

Luke answered. “Yes?”

“Mr. Williams, this is Detective Stearns calling you again.”

Luke listened as he motioned for Linda to come closer so that she could also hear the conversation. “Yes, we’re here,” Luke said, indicating that both he and Linda were listening.

“Good,” Stearns said, “I recognize it’s late but I’m pretty sure you aren’t concerned with all that so let me begin by explaining to you what has transpired since you both were in my office.”

“Is it something bad, Detective?” Linda interjected before Stearns had finished.

“Actually, I wouldn’t say that.”

“Then, you found him?” Linda said, her voice choking.

“No, the search is still going forward and it’s my understanding that you’ll be joining me between 6:30 and 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. Am I correct?”

“Yes, we will be there,” Luke said, trying to calm Linda. “But I thought you had something new to tell us? If it’s not about Aidan being found, then what is it?”

Detective Stearns began going over all the events of the day including the visit with Ms. McKenzie and the recent discovery of the hairs.

“I don’t understand,” Luke said. “Are you now saying that this guy, Roy Brown, might have taken Aidan?”

“Perhaps. I know it’s a stretch but I have everyone looking to see if this guy has been anywhere near Taylor.”

“Didn’t you say that this other boy was brutally murdered?” Linda started crying uncontrollably as Luke continued to question Detective Stearns.

“Yes, I did, but I still feel like—”

“Like there is still hope, right?”

“Exactly,” Stearns said. “I can’t explain it but I believe that right now, your boy is still alive.”

“I feel the same thing, Detective,” Linda said, interjecting herself into the conversation.

Luke grabbed Linda and put his arms around her as Detective Stearns continued to elaborate, knowing that she needed some reassurance in her mind so as not to collapse in sheer desperation. Linda welcomed his compassion as she wrapped her arms back around him in reciprocation, her body pressing hard against his.

“Mr. Williams?”

“Yes, Detective, we are still here.” He knew the pause had left an uncomfortable silence. “My wife and I, as you know, are just absolutely drained emotionally and helpless physically. We just needed a moment.”

“Take all the time you need. I just want you to know where we need to meet up in the morning and what is being done in the investigation.” Stearns hated having to sound so apathetic, like it was all work, no emotion, devoid of attachments.
