Leaving Walter Albright’s house, Journey took the wheel again. “I’m going to drive out of the neighborhood and then find an empty lot. We can make some calls and check out what Albright just told us.”

Lucas let out a breath. “Good plan.”

A few miles down the road, Journey pulled into a deserted strip mall and drove around the back of the building. Chances were slim that Albright would get in his car to follow them. Even so, a bit of cover was always better than working exposed.

Journey slid the manila folder holding the archery club lists out of her bag. “I’ll look over the list of contest participants. You call the Lodge to check out Albright’s story.”

Lucas nodded and pulled out his phone. Journey began to skim names.

In the previous year, the team that took first included Walter Albright, Harold Cubbins, Carson Steele, and Bill Wheeler. This, they knew.

Second place included Travis Butler, Gene Bannon, Joel O’Halloran, and Scott Whitman.

Journey had the names of the “overprivileged pricks” Albright told them about. Coming from him, that comment left her mighty curious.

Lucas dropped his phone into his lap. “Albright’s story checks out. The server we spoke to yesterday confirmed Albright and Wheeler were there all evening. Even left her a hundred-dollar tip.”

“You don’t think that was hush money, do you? To maintain a cover story?”

“It’s possible. But the receipt Albright flashed earlier totaled nearly five hundred dollars. A twenty percent tip is standard.”

Journey whistled. “That’s a lot of whiskey.”

“Or, judging from what Bill Wheeler said, a little bit of the good stuff.”

“Nothing can be that good.” She knew she sounded like a miser, but come on. There was no need to spend that much on booze. “I got the names of the younger team, by the way. I’m looking into their backgrounds now.”

“I’ll help. Give me a few.”

Journey opened the windows to let a breeze into the car while she worked. But with the tools on hand, she couldn’t pull up much. None of those boys’ names showed up on social media, which, of course, was impossible when adolescents were involved. There had to be some record of them somewhere.

With Lucas hovering over her shoulder, Journey continued searching, scouring the internet. No matches. However, Scott Whitman, a seventy-nine-year-old man, came up nearly every time she searched. Travis Butler gave Journey plenty of information on a deceased local man. And when she looked up Gene Bannon, a woman kept getting flagged.

Something was off. But without going back to the office to use the FBI databases, Journey couldn’t confirm her suspicion. She tried one last time with Joel O’Halloran. That one showed an arrest record for a man who’d been in prison since 2011.

She locked eyes with Lucas. “Fake names, you suppose?”

He shrugged. “Could be.”

“Why would a bunch of teenagers use fake names for a tournament?”

“I’m guessing that’s the million-dollar question.” His thumbs flew across his phone screen. “I’m giving Keller a heads-up, and I’ll see if we can get someone in the office to double-check those names while we’re on the road.
