CHAPTER ELEVEN
An Unexpected Turn
J osie could feel herself getting colder and colder as she walked farther and farther along the passage. It was so dark in there that the light from the candle hardly made a difference and she was glad of Gliderâs presence with his bright white fur. As if understanding her feelings, Glider stayed close to Josieâs legs, matching his steps to her cautious ones and offering an occasional nuzzle on her hand.
The passageway was narrow with a low ceiling and Josie could just about walk through it without having to stoop. It curved so much that she had no idea in which direction she was actually going. Then suddenly she came to a dead end. Holding the candle up close to the wall, she could see small holes in the shape of a teardrop and peered through them. She could see and hear nothing. Whatever lay in front of those holes was empty and in darkness. She felt a seat carved out of the stone and sat down. It was like being on one half of a confessional box waiting for the priest to come in on the other side and forgive your sins.
âTime to put your collar on, Glider,â she said, bending down and placing the collar round his neck. It glowed bright blue for a few seconds then turned back to its ordinary brown colour. âWow!â Josie exclaimed. âI love elf magic.â She cuddled up to Glider for warmth as it was quite chilly and blew out the candleâlike Filan had shouted at her to do after the door closed behind them.
She wasnât sure how long she sat there, and may even have fallen asleep, when she became aware of distant voices growing louder. She looked through the holes and watched as a flickering light grew closer and closer. She recognised Filan and Arthurâs voices instantly, along with two other unfamiliar male voices.
Josie watched as a short man dressed in a dark red tunic and trousers, exactly like her grandadâs green ones, walked around the room lighting various candles on the walls before sitting down to join the other men, who had positioned themselves around a circular wooden table that sat in the middle of the room. Leaning over, he lit a huge lamp on the centre of the table and Josie could now see the room perfectly.
Facing her, Filan was seated between an empty chair on his left and what looked like an ornately carved throne on his right, which was also currently empty. Josie presumed this was where the Dream Maker sat. She wondered if the empty chair was her grandadâs as he was the only elder missing.
The short man in red sat next to the empty chair with Arthur on his right, and on Arthurâs right sat a thin man dressed in white. Josie instantly disliked him. His hair was long, grey and greasy. It hung lank and lifeless down to his shoulders. His face was gaunt and his mouth thin and harsh.
