CHAPTER 23
Night of the full moon.
Mike Tyson once said, âEveryone has a fight plan until they get punched in the nose.â Something like that. His point was valid. You need a plan even if you know thereâs a one-hundred percent chance it will turn to crap as soon as you start. With a plan, either youâll be surprised when it works, or badly disappointed, but you can think about contingencies. Without one, youâre just screwed from the get-go.
Cree and I sat in the Charger in a Walmart parking lot off Charleston. Styx blared, despite Creeâs obvious distaste. Screw it, a condemned man gets a last meal, right? I was writing a supplies list in a small notebook., After scribbling two three-one-two area code numbers, I ripped the page out and handed it to Cree. âIf anything happens to me, tell these folks what happened. You can tell them everything. Donât look at me like that. I mean everything.â Bill and Nurse Ball. They had a right to know. Francine could break the news to the old man.
Bill would have been a huge help right now, but heâd gone radio silent. At first, I thought it was just a time zone problem. Then it got worrying. He never goes twenty minutes, let alone three hours, without checking his messages. I heard nothing from Chicago. Nada.
After three texts and a voicemail that sounded more chipper than the situation warranted, I let it go and focused on the task at hand. Bill went to the top of my âworry about it if you liveâ list. Iâd already ruled out calling in Francine and her cleanup squad. Meaghan and Gramma were better off not knowing anything.
Mostly it was ego. Also, trying to text out an explanation on my phone was more than my clumsy thumbs could manage. Autocorrect would have burst into flames. And what the hell would I say?
Cree smiled assurance at me. God, she had just the slightest Liv Tyler overbite. It was cute as hell. Her eyes gave her away as she said, âNothingâs going to happen.â
âYeah, it will, we just donât know how bad itâll get. Believe me, I really hope you wonât have to make those calls.â
She looked out the windshield instead of at me. âOkay, we should break this down so we donât forget anything. Transportation, logistics, and defense.â
âWe have transportation.â I affectionately patted the steering wheel of my trusty Charger.
âSeriously? Youâre going to drive a black and orange muscle car across the desert to sneak up on a bunch of cowboys who know youâre coming?â
Iâd kind of imagined a âfast and furiousâ approach, complete with guitars wailing. In my mental movie, it was cool as hell. Her point was valid, though. Crap. Why couldnât I be cool just once? âI sâpose not.â
Cree nodded and drew a big check mark on the page. âI can get the maintenance truck from the Museum, so transportation. Check.
