Details of the lesson: When flying a jet airplane, three speeds are calculated before every takeoff: V1 , VR , and V2 . Note the following with regard to these speeds.

As the plane starts accelerating down the runway, if anything goes wrong (an engine failure; a flock of birds, etc.) before reaching V1 , the captain must abort the takeoff. If the speed is past V1 , there is not enough runway ahead of the plane to stop, and the captain must continue to VR . This means rotating (lifting off) and starting to climb as quickly as circumstances allow; additionally, the captain must not allow his or her aircraft’s speed to drop below V2 (the minimum speed to maintain flight). For a veteran airline captain, all of this happens almost automatically; flight crews are trained to react this way.

If all engines have lost thrust, the plane is going down, and the only choice is where—perhaps the Hudson River? There will be no panic on the flight deck, just an understanding and immediate recognition of what must be done to save lives—a decision made by the captain.

Remember Captain Sullenberger’s flight from La Guardia Airport in New York (Feb. 5, 2009, US Airways flight # 1549)? He encountered a flock of birds shortly after take-off which destroyed both engines; he did a wonderful job of handling that emergency.

Several options had been considered, evaluated, and then dismissed in the two minutes just after the bird strike and before the Hudson River became the landing option of choice: Could he return to LaGuardia? “We can’t do that!” How about Teterboro, New Jersey? “No, it is impossible!” (Thus say the air traffic control tapes.)

With no thrust available from the engines, the aircraft’s speed was rapidly dropping, and its nose had to be continually lowered to keep the plane’s speed at or above V2 . The best choice, really the only choice that could assure the best chance of survival, was the Hudson River; he no doubt thanked God for that River! This situation called for a trained captain to make that decision—not a child. Even at that, he would have his hands full.

You will see why this information is relevant because of the danger that I eventually recognized (as an adult) and my reaction to it. I finally saw the need to call it quits—the W/W/H’s pressure to deliberately put children in harm’s way, by pushing baptism on them, became the turning point for me; let me explain how it came about.

I was already having serious reservations about the propriety of the hierarchy’s teaching, nearly demanding child baptism. The study article, “Youths, Make It your Choice to Serve Jehovah” (Watchtower July 1, 2006), was becoming more and more troublesome for me as the W/W/H was continuously pressuring Witness parents and their children to get those kids baptized . It was not the young people’s choice. It was the hierarchy’s choice and demand .
