Chapter Three

It was a hellish morning, and I slept like crap after yesterday’s hours of tests, bodies, and everything else. I woke up to an empty bed, Chase was already off to school and there was a note on the coffee machine ‘Decaf Only’. Frankie knew I needed sleep and that I would probably cheat from her rule. Not like I haven’t already.

Walking into my other home away from home, I realize how comfortable I am in a shrink’s office. Makes me laugh a bit, considering how much I avoid these places in my daily life. Looking up from the front room’s desk, the receptionist holds up one finger signifying ‘one moment’ and I smile in return. She’s new, otherwise I would have been waved through. Normally it would have irritated me, but this time it gives me a few more seconds to clear my head. The commute didn’t help, damn traffic made me angrier by the minute.

Looking around the room, I can tell it’s newly renovated. The medical facility finally decided to fix the cracks in the walls caused by super-storm Sandy. The worn carpets have been replaced with clean hardwood flooring. The walls are a calm, light blue. Frankie will hate it if they’ve renovated her office. She was quite happy with the way it was.

“May I help you?” The receptionist grabs my attention.

“Hi, I’m here to see Dr. Ryan.”

“Do you have an appointment?”

“Umm, no, I usually don’t . . .”

Frankie rounds the corner out of the hallway at this moment, the amusement obvious on her face.

“Miriam, this is Detective Jasmine Steele, you can let her through any time. Unless I’m with a patient, of course. I work with her on various cases, consulting with the police department.” She says omitting that she’s my girlfriend as well. Have to test the waters before true disclosure is given. Never know the responses you’ll get.

“I’m sorry, detective. I won’t make the same mistake twice.”

“It’s not a problem, you’re just doing your job.”

Frankie sweeps her hand toward the hallway to her office as she walks ahead of me. I simply nod to Miriam and head after Frankie. Walking past a few closed doors, I walk into Frankie’s office and smile. Only the floor has changed. I know she hated the carpet as it showed its age. The new hardwood, with a classic rug in the middle makes it feel more homey. The old couch and chairs, perfectly broken in and beyond comfortable as I’ve napped there on occasion. The rest of it just looks like a fresh coat of paint, nothing more. I’m sure all these renovations went on after hours with specific designs for all the offices.

“I told them I’d be most happy if they just fixed the minor damage and gave me a new floor. My office is a sanctuary for many patients who need consistency. The hard wood would have been enough of a shock. I don’t need to start all over because the powers that be think they know best.
