CHAPTER 7

WELCOME TO HOLLYWOOD

Most bands would have been devastated to lose their label’s backing, but not the Jonas Brothers. They knew that bigger and better things were waiting for them, and they were determined to find them. So when Hollywood Records made the boys an offer, they jumped at the chance. Hollywood Records is the music arm of Disney, and it is the label of some of the hottest teen artists in the music business, like Aly & AJ, Hilary Duff, and the Cheetah Girls. Hollywood Records has a reputation for its nurturing family-oriented vibe and its ability to launch teen artists to super-stardom, and that was exactly what Kevin, Nick, and Joe were looking for. Hollywood Records and the rest of Disney were equally as excited to partner with the boys. “Kevin, Joe and Nick are the real deal—incredible musicians, phenomenal performers, charismatic stars,” Gary Marsh, president of entertainment for the Disney Channel Worldwide, told E! Online. “An act like the Jonas Brothers doesn’t come along very often. This is a giant coup for the Disney Channel.”

Hollywood Records didn’t waste any time putting their newest stars to work. The boys were excited to be working with new producers and were eager to get back into the studio—but this time they were doing it their way. Kevin, Joe, and Nick played him songs that they’d been working on since they recorded their first album, and he loved them.

“When we signed to Hollywood,” Kevin told starpulse.com, “we told the label, ‘Hey, we have some demos of songs we’ve been writing for the past year and a half.’ We thought it’d be so funny to just record those songs for the album to see what we could get away with. But those turned out to be the songs on the record!” Fields, along with Paul Jonas, worked with the boys to polish their songs and decide which singles to feature, and then the boys went into the studio and laid down eleven new tracks in just twenty-one days! In addition to writing and singing all of the songs on the album, they played all the instruments. Kevin played lead guitar, Joe played guitar and keyboards, and Nick played keyboards, guitar, and drums.

Lots of artists spend months or even years recording an album, which just goes to show how seriously the Jonas Brothers take their music. “The album was very much a collaborative process,” Kevin told SingerUniverse Magazine. “It’s definitely our baby, but John completely understood our vision and made sure we were there to help him guide the process every day of the recording process.
