Chapter 7

Colleen was very leery about having another phone conversation after how the last one turned out. She had no choice, though. After days of digging, she had only managed to come up with this number. Her hopes were riding on it.

James had dated a few people publicly, some of which had made the news, as such things always did whenever someone wanted to try to get gossip going. His most recent flame had been a woman named Dahlia. Little information was given on her in the article Colleen had read, except that she was a makeup artist at the time. However, using that, and some educated guesses, Colleen had found a website for a company where Dahlia used to work. A contact number had been listed.

A gruff, male voice answered the phone. “Transformation Inc., at your service.”

“Is… Is Dahlia there?” Colleen asked.

There was a long, long pause, during which Colleen held her breath and prayed to whoever was listening to give her a miracle.

“Damn,” the man said. “Guess I need to update the website, huh? Kept putting it off. Sorry, Dahlia doesn’t work here anymore. We have plenty of other artists for you to choose from.”

“I need to talk with Dahlia,” Colleen insisted. “Is there any way I can get in touch with her?”

Another very long pause, which didn’t bode well for her. She knotted her hand into a fist and waited, trembling, listening to her own rasping breathing echoing back at her.

“This isn’t about makeup, is it?” the man asked. Colleen saw no need to answer him. It was pretty obvious. “Look, girl, I don’t exactly feel comfortable handing out her info. If you couldn’t find any way to get in touch with her except by this number, maybe she doesn’t want to be found by random people.”

I’m not going to get anywhere by keeping my cards close.

“I understand, sir,” Colleen responded, quietly. “I’m a business owner and I would never, ever give out an employee’s private information, even if they didn’t work for me anymore. There’s so much that can go wrong, and I don’t know that person’s reasons for wanting the information. If not sure if I would do it even after hearing what I’m about to tell you. Maybe in the case of an emergency, but for this?”

“Why ask me to do something that you wouldn’t do yourself?” he growled.

She sensed he was very, very close to hanging up on her and leaving her with nowhere else to turn. She had to get over this obstacle. There was no other path!

“Because I have reached the point where I have no other option except to be hypocritical. It’s this or nothing, and that’s the truth. Please, help me, but not if it violates your moral code.”

“I’d think you were being sarcastic if I couldn’t hear your sincerity.” The man sighed. “Okay. My name’s Jay. Tell me your reason and we’ll see what I think.”

She couldn’t screw this up. She started to speak, trying to sound professional and in control; her voice betrayed her, shaking the whole way through.
