By the time we’d cycled to Hangman’s Stream, the rain was much heavier. The sky was getting darker and the light was fading fast. By the time we’d camouflaged our bikes with broken branches and loose leaves, the water was rising fast, too. Only the bravest of the brave would dare to swing across.

Luckily bravery is something I’ve never been short of.

I volunteered to go first.

The car tyre was wet and I knew that if I didn’t get my feet in exactly the right place, I was bound to slip off as I jumped on.
