Chapter 12
A Walk In The Sky
âI could get used to this,â Ruby sighed, leaning back in her chair. She was just about to kick her socked feet up on the table, but Geena smacked them away.
âDonât get too comfy.â
Rubyâs mouth broke out in a grin. âNo one will be as comfy as you come March, when youâre hurling over the side of a giant ship.â
I clutched at my own stomach. Nausea and having to hear about people being nauseous were two of my weaknesses. If she started making disgusting noises I was going to have to excuse myself.
âI still canât believe she bought those tickets,â Geena said. âI know Frannie can be impulsive about things, but she had to have given this one some thought. Right?â
I nodded. âI would give her the benefit of the doubt. Her mind works a little differently, I think. Sheâs very much in the moment, you know? Iâve known people like thatâmagical and normal humans alike. She probably got the idea from somewhere and went right to ordering the tickets.â
Last night Frannie had explained that the suitcases were a last-minute trick up her sleeve. She wanted us to be completely baffled when we saw the presentsâweâd need them for the trip anyway.
Geena sipped her coffee. âI suppose thatâs true. Though she was a bit toasted off.â
âNot that you have much room to talk, Mama,â Ruby laughed. âWhen you called me on the phone at two oâclock in the morning crying about how much you missed me I had to remind you that you stayed with us on Christmas Eve and spent most of Christmas with us.â She shot me a wink.
Geenaâs cheeks went red, but she stirred her coffee and looked out the kitchen window. âI have no idea what youâre talking about.â
I went hunting for the creamer, accidentally slamming the cabinet too hard, I winced. I knew Max and Eva were taking their naps. âSorry!â I whispered.
I held the warm mug in my hands, staring down into the dark liquid. âWhere did you get these mugs from, Geena?â The pattern was the very same pattern as the ones Cinda had personalized with her logo on them. âCinda found one of hers broken at the fair. Maybe we can replace it.â
âThe Target in Bonneau, I believe. It was a few years ago so Iâm not sure theyâll have the same designs this time around, but if Cindaâs missing one Iâm more than happy to give her one.â
âThatâs sweet of you. Iâll wash mine out when Iâm done and take it with me to the fair tonight. Iâm sure Cinda will be happy to see it.â
We finished up our drinks, talking more about Frannie and her electric personality. I wasnât surprised at all to hear about the first time Geena had met her. It involved some chickens, a fancy dress, and âabout a pound of rhinestones.â
Pulling at my blonde hair in need of some sprucing up, I sighed. âIâll have to book an appointment with her soon.
