JESSICA SAT ON the balcony, wrapped up in her heavy coat, and warmed her hands with the butane heater. Renee had a rare Saturday night off, so they were enjoying each other’s company.

“Have another,” Renee grinned as she pulled a longneck bottle of beer from the snow that had accumulated in the corner of the balcony.

“Okay, but this is my last one,” Jessica popped the top off with the opener and took a long drink.

“Since you don’t want to, is there any way that I can go live in the condo?”

“Ha ha. I’m not sure how Tori would feel about that, by the way.”

“Eh. If the place is as nice as you described, she’d get over me being there in a heartbeat.”

“It’s the nicest place I think I’ve ever seen.” Jessica looked off into the distance, imagining walking through the condo.

“I don’t get it. What don’t you like?”

“It’s not me.”

“You can’t stand being pampered, can you? Once in a while, sis, you need to kick your feet up and relax.”

“It’s not like that, Ren. The whole place was so alien. It’s hard to describe. Wonderful, but...”

“Alien. I got it.”

Victoria opened the sliding glass door and shut it quickly, finding a seat near Jessica.

“Damn, it’s cold out here.” Victoria rubbed her gloved hands together before hiding them in her underarms.

“Want one?” Renee held up a cold beer.

“How’d you know?” Victoria took the beer and made quick time of getting it open and quenching her thirst.

“You two behaving?” Victoria asked as she glanced from the blonde sister to the brunette.

“Of course,” Jessica smiled innocently. “I don’t think we could behave badly in this cold, anyway.”

Jessica heard the house rattle from the force of the front door opening and closing.

“Oh. Bet that’s Gary. Be right back,” Renee jumped up and went inside.

Jessica waited until Renee walked inside before saying anything. “It wouldn’t hurt my feelings any if she gave him the heave hoe.”

Nodding, Victoria leaned closer. “You doing okay? Want me to warm you up?”

“I’m okay. Maybe later?”

“It’s a date.”

Jessica looked down, feeling slightly bashful. It wasn’t like Victoria was overtly flirting or anything, so Jessica chalked up her feelings to being on her third beer of the evening.

With a sudden whoosh, the balcony door was pushed open. “That’s what I thought.” Gary glared at Jessica and Victoria before closing the door. Jessica could hear his voice escalating in volume and anger. Too many times she had sat by and done nothing when Gary was in one of his moods. Tonight, she didn’t have it in her to do that.

She put her beer on the table and moved to open the door.

“Don’t get involved, Jess. They need to work things out on their own.” Victoria rose to cut off her path.

“Let me go, Victoria. It isn’t right how he treats her.”

“I know. But you made me promise not to pummel the guy. Well, you promised me you’d let Renee figure things out.”

“You like listening to that?” Jessica flicked her hand in the direction of Gary’s muffled, yet still amplified voice.
