JESSICA SAT ON the balcony, wrapped up in her heavy coat, and warmed her hands with the butane heater. Renee had a rare Saturday night off, so they were enjoying each otherâs company.
âHave another,â Renee grinned as she pulled a longneck bottle of beer from the snow that had accumulated in the corner of the balcony.
âOkay, but this is my last one,â Jessica popped the top off with the opener and took a long drink.
âSince you donât want to, is there any way that I can go live in the condo?â
âHa ha. Iâm not sure how Tori would feel about that, by the way.â
âEh. If the place is as nice as you described, sheâd get over me being there in a heartbeat.â
âItâs the nicest place I think Iâve ever seen.â Jessica looked off into the distance, imagining walking through the condo.
âI donât get it. What donât you like?â
âItâs not me.â
âYou canât stand being pampered, can you? Once in a while, sis, you need to kick your feet up and relax.â
âItâs not like that, Ren. The whole place was so alien. Itâs hard to describe. Wonderful, but...â
âAlien. I got it.â
Victoria opened the sliding glass door and shut it quickly, finding a seat near Jessica.
âDamn, itâs cold out here.â Victoria rubbed her gloved hands together before hiding them in her underarms.
âWant one?â Renee held up a cold beer.
âHowâd you know?â Victoria took the beer and made quick time of getting it open and quenching her thirst.
âYou two behaving?â Victoria asked as she glanced from the blonde sister to the brunette.
âOf course,â Jessica smiled innocently. âI donât think we could behave badly in this cold, anyway.â
Jessica heard the house rattle from the force of the front door opening and closing.
âOh. Bet thatâs Gary. Be right back,â Renee jumped up and went inside.
Jessica waited until Renee walked inside before saying anything. âIt wouldnât hurt my feelings any if she gave him the heave hoe.â
Nodding, Victoria leaned closer. âYou doing okay? Want me to warm you up?â
âIâm okay. Maybe later?â
âItâs a date.â
Jessica looked down, feeling slightly bashful. It wasnât like Victoria was overtly flirting or anything, so Jessica chalked up her feelings to being on her third beer of the evening.
With a sudden whoosh, the balcony door was pushed open. âThatâs what I thought.â Gary glared at Jessica and Victoria before closing the door. Jessica could hear his voice escalating in volume and anger. Too many times she had sat by and done nothing when Gary was in one of his moods. Tonight, she didnât have it in her to do that.
She put her beer on the table and moved to open the door.
âDonât get involved, Jess. They need to work things out on their own.â Victoria rose to cut off her path.
âLet me go, Victoria. It isnât right how he treats her.â
âI know. But you made me promise not to pummel the guy. Well, you promised me youâd let Renee figure things out.â
âYou like listening to that?â Jessica flicked her hand in the direction of Garyâs muffled, yet still amplified voice.
