Ten minutes later, a tall, lanky man with a blond ponytail, cowboy boots, and a tailored cowboy shirt with pearl snaps, crouched down in front of him, elbows on his knees.

Woody zeroed in on the extra-large turquoise stone on the man’s ring and kept playing.

He waited until Woody took a break. “I’m psyched to hear the show tonight.” He had clear blue eyes and a friendly, engaging smile. “Mind if I ask you a couple of questions?”

“Sure,” Woody said, “what’s the second one?” He noticed the man’s ease of motion retrieving a leather-bound notebook from the back pocket of his jeans and knew the guy was a pro.

“That’s some crazy stuff that’s been going down with Ray Bell. The papers reported he jumped off the bridge and left a suicide note about ‘Stephanie,’ now he’s been spotted at his mother’s house.”

“That’s not a question.” Woody played a super-human flurry of notes and slapped four fingers across his strings. “Who do you work for?”

“Rolling Stone. I was hoping to get your take on the whole Ray Bell thing. There’s an entry in the Marin County sheriff’s log that indicates they went to your house asking about Ray. Word has it Ray was at your house the night he didn’t jump off the bridge.”

“The night he didn’t jump off the bridge? Every night of his life?”

“Have you been served with Ray’s lawsuit?”

“Lawsuit?”

“Filed today in Federal Court in San Francisco. You haven’t heard about it? Does that mean Ray’s alive?”

Woody slapped the top of his guitar. “The fucker’s alive! I knew it! I knew it when I saw those shots of him on TV at his mother’s house.” Woody shook his head. “The guy can be a real asshole, but I’m glad he hung in there. He sings too good to stop now.” Woody’s mind took off racing. Another lawsuit? He glanced at his cigarettes on the chair next to him. This was the exact kind of distraction he hated when he was trying to get mentally prepared to play. And here comes more of the mind-fuck morass lawyers always bring.

“Did you guys talk about a pending lawsuit when Ray was at your house?”
