CHAPTER SEVEN

COOPER stirred the pot for the nineteenth time and tried to stop the chicken sticking to the bottom of the pan. He wasn’t too good at this but he was determined to try. The stainless-steel kitchen currently looked like a disaster zone. There were three pans in the kitchen sink, every worktop space was filled with ingredients and utensils, and the cookery book he’d propped against a wall kept sliding downwards and automatically closing. To top it all off, everything was covered in a thin coating of flour following an incident with a dropped bag. But no matter how much chaos ensued, above all Cooper was feeling happy.

After a week of sharing a home and cobbling meals together from the remnants of Cooper’s freezer they’d finally gone shopping. That morning he’d learned that Melissa loved chicken, hated beef, was funny about fish and absolutely detested prawns. Just as well in her current condition. He knew she loved chocolate, but limited her supply to the occasional square and she seemed to drink gallons of a diet brand of drink from Scotland. And she had a penchant for beans on toast, late at night.

‘Can I give you a hand in there?’ called Melissa. She was currently lying across the red sofa, reading the latest bestseller. She could vaguely see the disarray surrounding Cooper, but she was having too much fun watching him trying to cook her dinner to go and help.

‘No,’ shouted Cooper. ‘I’ve told you, just relax.’ He stirred frantically as the chicken seemed to stick to the bottom of the pan for the twentieth time that evening. His rice boiled over with huge hissing sounds as the water hit the steel hob. He looked at the slightly overdone chicken and the definitely overdone rice, before heaving a sigh and turning off the gas hob. It would have to do.

He found a tray that he’d never known he owned and stuck the two plates on it to carry through to the living room. From a plastic bag hidden behind the microwave he found his secret purchase from that afternoon and put it next to her plate.

‘Here we go.’ Cooper plunked the tray down on the coffee table next to Melissa as she swung her legs off the sofa. He watched her as she gazed in amazement at the gift and a smile spread across her face. She leaned over and picked it up.

The little ultrasound picture had been placed in a red frame to match the décor in the room. ‘You put it in a frame?’ she asked, momentarily stunned.

‘I thought it should have pride of place,’ he said, leaning next to her to look at the picture. ‘I also thought we could probably update it every four weeks when you get your new scans.’

The smile reached up to her ears. ‘That’s a nice thought,’ she whispered quietly. She turned to face him and he automatically clasped his arms around her waist, pulling her close. ‘Why did you do that?’ she asked.
