It Is Impossible to Remain Silent

2. François Maspero later became an editor of controversial books on censored subjects, such as the use of torture during the hostilities in Algeria. A committed leftist, he owned a bookstore in the Latin Quarter. The shop became a gathering place for political activists.

3. Musulman was a slang term used in Nazi concentration camps for emaciated and exhausted inmates who appeared resigned to their impending death.

4. During the student-worker uprising of May 1968 in France, which paralyzed the country and challenged the establishment and Charles de Gaulle’s presidency, demonstrators tore up paving stones, set up barricades, occupied factories and universities, took over theaters and the Cannes Film Festival, and more. The Compagnies républicaines de sécurité (CRS) are a section of the police force trained to intervene during demonstrations and restore the peace. The group was created by de Gaulle in 1944. During the uprising in 1968, the demonstrators taunted the CRS with slogans implying that they were as cruel as the Nazi SS.
