The pejorative portrait of Islam implied in this poetic opening to Hellas reflects Shelley’s personal sympathies, but also his political purpose. As Jacqueline Mulhallen notes, the “avowed purpose of Hellas was to gain sympathy for the struggle for Greek independence” from Ottoman rule; Shelley himself famously insists to his readers in the drama’s Preface: “we are all Greeks”.21 Considering this authorial bias, it is unsurprising to find Hellas filtering a range of hostile depictions of Muslim characters – a strategy that emerges in the drama’s very opening, with Shelley’s poem featuring the following introduction:
