Insomnia wasn’t Eric’s thing, except for tonight. He knew why. He was by himself in a bed while Alexander and Rebecca lay down the hallway, together, without him. Fuck. So close and yet so far? He thought they were home free when they’d had dinner together in a private room. Then, there were the after-dinner drinks and a slow rise by Alexander signaling it was time to end the evening. Then Tony, who he was growing to dislike openly, magically appeared and said, “this way.” Eric was led to this bedroom and left alone. A-fucking-lone. He was spending the fucking night, down the hall from a man who—could he even think it—might have used him to get closer to Rebecca, despite his earlier invitation.

Had she used him to get to Alexander?

Why was it so bloody hot in here? Because you’re thinking of Alexander, idiot. And, maybe a little bit about Rebecca. Every fantasy he’d ever had was unleashed this past week. That’s what Alexander did. Eric could drown in the amount of porn filling his head, this time with a woman included. For him, it wasn’t unheard of, but it’d been years since he’d done so. Their little Library encounter only solidified that deal. Did Rebecca have to be so kind, sweet, sultry—and so adventurous? No wonder Alexander loved her, and damn, the man did love her. That was so obvious.

He threw off the covers.

Alexander didn’t use people, he reasoned. Rebecca had been open and honest with him. He hadn’t been used. Then why the fuck did it feel like it? He was too hot … that’s all. It should not have bothered him. He was often uncomfortable, sleeping wherever, whenever he could between jobs, on floors, in tents.

A sharp crack made him sit up. A slice of light cut across the floor, and a woman’s silhouette filled the door.

“Are you asleep?” Rebecca had come to his room. She probably needed to chat. Well, he was in no mood to help her navigate.

“No,” he growled.

“Good.” The thick oriental carpet muffled her footsteps. Her hand felt down his arm to his hand. “Come on.”

“To?”

“To bed.”

“But—”

“He told me to come get you.” She dropped her hold on his hand. “Unless you don’t want to.”

His legs hit the ground, and he stood. All his mental garbage for the last thirty minutes was for nothing, perhaps? Good. “No, no, of course … ”

Her delicate hand recaptured his. Out in the hallway, torchiere lamps at the baseboards lit up as they passed. God forbid people had trouble finding their bedrooms. He was only in his boxers, and the cooler air of the hallway felt fantastic against his overheated skin.

They stopped at the end of the hall before a door that looked like any other. Well, what had he expected? Carved lions in the wood? A soldier with a spear standing guard outside? Actually, yes.
