Chapter 14

Confluence

“Have you got the photo, Private?”

Bobby nodded, then double-checked that an image of the flipchart appeared on the borrowed Android. “Yes, sir.”

Major Maddox stood beside the chart, Sharpie in hand, and began marking it up as Captain Riggs and the others watched.

“The others” amounted to Sergeant Diaz, Sergeant Duarte and Bobby who, it seemed, was only there under sufferance. Relieved though he was that they’d successfully taken the base—and that Maddox had switched to their side—he couldn’t help feeling sidelined as the officers took over. It had been he, Ellie, Patrick and Jodi, and Yuri, who’d walked the hard miles to reach this point, and now they were in danger of being excluded. Ellie, in particular, was livid, though he’d promised to share what he found out with her.

Bobby focused on the map Maddox was gesturing at. It showed the positions of Schultz’s forces—at least those that were operating in the open. If the map was to believed, they were concentrated to the southwest of Denver in a broad band that, at its western edge, bordered Booker’s territory.

Bobby found himself wondering where the forces that Sheriff Cline was coordinating came into this. He hadn’t mentioned them to the officers—only Duarte and Sims knew, and then only because they had to be part of the president’s briefing. Somehow, he hadn’t found the inclination to tell Maddox and Riggs. Perhaps it all came down to the same resentment he felt at being elbowed aside now that the big boys and girls were taking charge.

The only crumb of comfort was that Buchanan had made it clear, in their first communication since taking the base, that she wanted as few people as possible involved in relaying messages. She’s a clever one, Bobby reflected. She’d somehow simultaneously expressed welcome to Maddox in particular, while also making it clear that, having given his oath of Schultz, he would have to earn her trust.

So, it was Bobby who took the phone with its photos—both before and after the Sharpie had been used—to the workshop of Earl Sims for him to upload. By complete coincidence, he found Ellie and the others there.

And one other.

It took him a moment to register who it was.

“Hey, Bob, how ya doin’?”

“Linwood? Where the hell have you been?”

He strode toward Linwood Witt and threw his arms around the old man.

“I’ve been enjoyin’ the hospitality of the ‘Reece Police.’ I went sneakin’ around once too often and her people got a hold of me. I know Evie came lookin’, but they told her I was off on a mission.”

“Jeez, you look thin.”

Witt grunted. “It weren’t exactly four-star service, my friend. So, that’s twice you came and rescued me. This fella,” he said, gesturing at Bobby and raising his voice, “he came lookin’ for me when he should’a left me to die in the desert. You’re a good man, Bob. A good man.”

He hugged Bobby close, his body shaking with emotion.

“It’s okay,” Bobby said. “I’m sorry I didn’t think to check the administrator’s jail—I didn’t know there was one.
