An improperly balanced chakra can affect its associated body parts, as well as a range of related emotions. For example, the throat chakra is located at the base of your neck and is associated with the color light blue. If it is closed and needs opening and balancing, you might be feeling stifled in communicating with others, unable to tell your “real” story, or afraid to tell the truth. In addition, many people believe that blocks in the energy body can have their roots in past-life experiences, so perhaps you were unable to “speak your truth” in a past life, and the subconscious memory of that experience is affecting your throat chakra now. And finally, since the throat chakra is associated with the thyroid, you might also want to check with your doctor to determine whether the problem you are having with a closed chakra is related to a physical condition. Some healing strategies for a throat chakra imbalance include primal screaming, singing, and chanting.

The gentlest way to address an imbalance of any chakra is simply to send love to that energy center. Hold your hands in a cuplike fashion over the chakra and imagine healing light and love streaming in from the universe. Ask the universe to “send this chakra what it needs at this time.” A great deal of information about chakras and the energy body, including techniques for balancing chakras, can be found on the Internet.

Perhaps you didn’t get a positive spin from your pendulum when asking the question, “Which chakra needs attention?” If that’s the case, you’ve learned that your chakras are open, balanced, and flowing freely. The following meditation can help keep them functioning properly.

Chakra Meditation

This meditation is a gentle way to harmonize your chakras. It can be done on its own, or added to your regular meditation practice.

Take a few moments to center yourself. Close your eyes and take four deep breaths in and out. In your mind’s eye, imagine a red circle of energy spinning clockwise, centered at your pelvis. Spend a few minutes focused on the glowing red color of your root chakra. Actively send love to this area, and ask that it be balanced. Hold the thought in your mind, “I am safe and secure. My body is grounded. I am rooted in the earth.”

Next, move your focus to your sacral chakra, located just below your navel. See in your mind’s eye a circle of vibrant orange energy. Take a few minutes to focus on it, and see and feel it spinning clockwise. With each inhaled breath, send love to your sacral chakra and ask that it be balanced. Hold the thought, “I deserve and enjoy pleasure in my life. I create easily and effortlessly.”

Move next to the solar plexus chakra, located just above your navel, and see in your mind a circle of radiant yellow energy. Again, imagine the circle spinning clockwise while you send love to that area. Ask the universe to balance your solar plexus chakra, and hold the affirmation, “I feel the power within me.
