THE WAY

In the preceding chapters we have reviewed the fundamental references, the pillars, and the rules that govern Islam. Taken together, they set out a framework, comprising the underlying concepts (God, humankind, and religion), the pillars and the meaning of faith, and practices (rituals, obligations, and prohibitions). But Islam can also be understood as a path to be followed—a Way—with ultimate objectives. It is here, in fact, that all the teachings of Islam find their coherence.

The source and point of departure is the oneness of God, humanity, and its link with the divine. Rules and laws lay down the limits of the path to be followed. The final destination, of which we must be acutely aware, imparts meaning to everything. In Islam, the notion of sharīʿah literally expresses the idea of the Way through which we make sense of life and death, the necessity of jihād, and gives direction to education, to social relations, and to our relationship with Nature.
