The Conditions of Stability

In the 1950s and 60s, three Russian scientists, Andrei Kolmogorov, Vladimir Arnold and Jurgen Moser, picked up Poincaré’s work. They discovered that stability in a three-body planetary system requires two essential conditions.

The first involves resonance.

Any two periodic motions can be in resonance, such as two moons moving around a planet.

If one circles the planet once while the other goes around it twice, they are in 2:1 resonance.

Also, they may both be in resonance with the planet’s own orbit.
