Chapter Twelve

Denny and his mate, Magrean, stood outside and waved us off together as we turned our sights up the slopes of the mountain.

Once we’d made it a good mile or two from Denny’s, I pulled my whistle from my inventory and called to my mount Thor.

A crackling of thunder and a bright flash brought the confused Kirin before me. He tossed his head and whinnied at me, his massive head slamming joyfully into my side.

“Hey Thor, how you doing?” I patted his warm hide and he tossed his head again.

“Druid! I am so glad to see that you are alright.” He sounded relieved to boot. “Kayda, She of the Frosty Winds, worries herself sick over you. Tell me where you are and I will tell her for you when I return.”

“I was hoping you might be able to take us to her.” I smiled at him but his confusion only mounted. He stamped his clawed foreleg and stared at me. “We’re on your mountain, Thor. We’re here where the Kirin call home.”

He stilled and looked around, his eyes widening. “You are, are you? I do not recognize this place. Are you sure you are here?”

“Yes, I am.” I smiled at him and hoped that I hadn’t brought us on a wild goose chase.

“Then here is what I wish you to do.” He sounded excited now, his mane flapping in the wind. “I will return to my people and you will shoot lightning into the sky, as much of it as you can. We will watch for you, and when we see it, we will come and collect you for her. Can you do this?”

“I think that we can,” I assured him. I glanced over at Kyr who listened closely and he grinned. “You have fifteen minutes, Thor. We’ll see you soon.”

He faded from sight and I turned to Kyr, “You wanna help me out here?”

“I would be honored.” He stepped closer to me and called Rai out to stand with us. We waited the fifteen minutes before I called Hubris to me and had both Kyr and Rai grab the scepter.

All three of us channeled mana into the weapon and I cast Lightning Storm with it. Lightning pierced the sky, going straight up for more than three hundred feet.

“Well, everything in the area and beyond knows that something is going on up here,” Sendak groused petulantly with his hair standing on end.

“You that freaked out?” Muu raised a scaled eyebrow at him and chuckled. “Who’s going to come looking for us?”

“Why do you needlessly say such things?” Greer looked like he was about to shit his pants when I heard large wings flapping toward us.

For a second, my heart called with joy at thinking it was my Kayda, but that stopped when a massive scaled head with hateful red eyes crested the side of the mountain nearest us.

“Nice flying lizard!” James tried to call to it, but all it did was growl and stare at us like it was sizing us up to kill and eat.
