Ghloughrin raises an eyebrow and asks: “So which one of you two actually represents your species…?”

Lucy smiles, nervously. “I don’t want you to think we’re all like her.”

“Yet surely she was chosen to speak for your planet.”

Yeah, sure, she was chosen. She was also someone the US State Department felt it could afford to lose if the Osuesseah turned out to be a bunch of purple people eaters or something. But it’s best not to tell Ghloughrin that. So Lucy decides to admit to another weakness entirely. “There are lots of different countries on my world,” she says. “We don’t always see eye to eye, I’m afraid.”

“Ah,” says Ghloughrin, nodding. She swallows back her nervousness as he shifts his weight to the other foot, making muscles move under his pelt. God, he’s beautiful. That fur isn’t a suit. It’s him. It shifts and flows with every little movement he makes. So gorgeous…

He looks back at her. “And are you as shocked as she was? About what the Congeries is for?”

“A little,” she nods. “And also… excited.” Oh, god. She’s acting like she’s still at school and desperate to find out what the boys have in their trousers. But it’s not trousers she’s interested in right now. It’s the gorgeous brown hair all over this man in front of her. She blinks and looks back up at his eyes as he sits down on the chair next to her, so close that she could reach out and stroke his furry legs.

“Do you think you’ll be able to participate?” he asks.

“I might be tempted,” she says, scooching forward just a little on her seat.

“And your colleagues?”

“Hm… do you mean one by one or all at the same time?”

Ghloughrin smiles. But it’s altogether too professional a smile for Lucy’s liking. “I mean, will they object to the way we do things here?”

“They don’t all need to take part, do they?” She leans forward, one hand dangling just inches away from his knee.

“I think you’d have some problems if they all decided to go home.”

“Well, maybe I could stay by myself…” she pushes herself forward again, and crosses her legs.

“Oh, no, you couldn’t do that,” he says. “We couldn’t give you accreditation if the rest of your delegation objects to the entire process. After all, what good would it do? No one on your home planet would listen to you.”

Does he still not get it? “Maybe the others just need something to know you’re serious,” she says.

“Oh, I’m very serious,” he replies.

“Some kind of… demonstration, perhaps.” Her eyes wander down to his crotch, where the bands of darker fur point to… well, to whatever he has between his legs. He must have something down there, surely?

She looks back up with a playful smile. His eyes go wide. Now he gets it.

“Oh!” he says. His eyes flick down her body. He’s interested. “You mean… oh.” He snatches his gaze away, stands and steps back. “I couldn’t possibly do that.”

“No?” says Lucy.

“I’m not a member of a delegation,” he says, trying to look elsewhere.
