The Bully

I see you from a distance, large and yellow—

and somehow that is enough that I can smell

the hot leather of your seats...

What terrible days those were!

Always the odd man out, friends coupled off

with other better friends,

left to defend myself against the older kids

with their pranks and their torments.

But now thirty-something it is I who

gets to be the bully! Nightly putting numbers

in their proper places when I sit down to do

the day’s accounting, ensuring that balances

are zeroed, rendered to the nothings they

should be.
