Chapter 18
Tony had been in a coma for a whole month. His doctor said he was lucky to have made it even that long. Monica had an undying faith that he would pull through and things would get back to normal.
In the meantime she kept everything moving. She paid his monthly credit card bills, (which wasn’t much because Tony was real responsible with his spending) and kept up with the house payments. She knew Tony would be proud when he found out how she’d held down the fort while he was battling for his life.
Today was NaNa’s first day of school but she was far from excited. Monica knew she missed her dad, but she didn’t know how to deal with it. She tried everything to cheer her up but nothing worked.
“Come on NaNa. Miss Mayble will be here any minute now to get you, and your hair still ain’t done.”
“But mommy I don’t want to go to school.” NaNa pouted, as her mother tried to finish her hair.
“I know baby, but you have to. I need you to be a big girl for me okay.”
“Is daddy gonna die? I miss him and I don’t want him to die.”
“Don’t think like that NaNa. Your daddy needs us to be strong for him. I miss him too, but we got to keep things going till he gets better. Come here give me a hug. Everything is going to be fine.”
Monica squeezed her daughter tightly, trying to keep both their spirits up. At that moment the doorbell rang. Monica went to answer it while NaNa got her book bag from her room. It was disturbing having a conversation like that with her daughter. It was depressing. She had to pull herself together before she answered the door.
“Good morning Miss Mayble. Thanks for helping me out on such short notice.”
“Don’t worry about it, we family. How you feel? Still nauseous?” Monica’s period was a couple of weeks late, and she had started having morning sickness. She’d felt the same way when she was pregnant with NaNa.
“Hi grandma.” NaNa ran over and hugged Miss Mayble’s legs.
“Hi Pumpkin. You ready for your first day of school? Miss Mayble asked.
“I guess so.” NaNa pouted.
“Aw. C’mon Pumpkin, cheer up. Give it a chance; you’re going to love it. There’s going to be boys and girls your age to play with. They sing songs and play games and best of all you get to go on field trips.”
“What’s a field trip?”
“Oh, I used to love those.” Miss Mayble said excitedly, giving NaNa something to look forward to. “When I was your age, my teacher used to take us to the zoo. They had all kinds of neat animals there, lions, tigers, and bears; stuff like that. You can’t learn everything from a book. Sometimes you got to go and see for yourself.”
“Are we going to the zoo today?”
“Probably not today but definitely during the school year. Ask your teacher about it when you see her today.” Miss Mayble had a way with kids that came from years of experience.
