Not-For-Profit IS For-Profit

In this chapter, I want to state my wholehearted agreement with the spiritual goodness of for-profit commerce. I grew up on a steady diet of slander and defamation of corporations and free enterprise. That changed in 2002 with my conversion to Christ. I couldn’t help noticing how the fingers that accused and maligned capitalism were some of its wealthiest beneficiaries. They freely dined on the best of what the system had to offer, while vomiting up venom against the hand that feeds them. Hence I am and will remain an unapologetic, affectionate capitalist.

Nothing you’re about to read should be interpreted to agree with the “for-profit business needs redemption” mantra. I reject that premise out of hand, especially considering its proponents’ narrative. Somehow, we’re led to believe nobility in work is only to be found working for nonprofits or government. Talk about institutions that make prime targets for corruption, abuse and financial malfeasance! If you can accept it, I put forward this premise: All human institutions and organizations are susceptible to foul play. In each sector are authentic, heroic leaders. In each sector are slackers and opportunists.

Another quick disclosure: I’m equally adamant that participation in charitable or community causes is nothing short of a way of life for the Radically Generous Entrepreneur. You can’t do this because you need a tax write-off or good publicity. (Yes, you will probably get those. But that must not govern your decision). This must flow, as my friend Dr. Andy Garrett says, purely from the joy you get from doing it. As soon as you start insisting on rewards or reciprocity for involvement, you open the door for entropy. It’s important to be highly selective, and therefore highly exclusive, as to the organizations you’re willing to support. You must support them from a place of authenticity, or you’ll eventually burn out.
