Beck and I kept a close eye on Whitaker, who was still cuffed to the rear door handle in the Explorer. The elderly woman who’d greeted us at the door was also the lone waitress in the unkempt diner.

There were a dozen empty tables and only two other customers in the place—a couple of bikers sitting across from each other, neither saying a word. One of them was downing coffee like it was cold water in the Sahara.

The waitress maintained her crooked smile, exposing a few missing molars. She plopped a couple of worn menus down on the table and asked, “Something to drink?”

Beck said, “I’ll take a water.”

I nodded. “I’ll have the same.”

After she walked away, Beck raised both hands in the air. “So, our safe house out here is a small operation. I’ve been in Johannesburg for almost two years, and trust me, not much goes on. This is by far the most boring assignment I’ve ever had. It’s tailor-made for an agent on the brink of retiring, looking to wind down their career.” Beck pointed his thumbs close to his chest and smiled. “Not an assignment for a relatively young hotshot looking to advance his career in the Agency.”

“Young?” I examined the lines on Beck’s forehead. “How old are you?”

“Relatively young,” he said.

I left it alone and moved on to more important matters. “I’m not sure why you’re talking about the safe house. I just needed a ride into the city.” I looked out the window at Whitaker, still sitting in the back of the Explorer, seemingly motionless. “I need to interrogate that weasel, and hopefully he’ll give up the information needed.”

“And then what are your plans with him?” Beck asked.

I finished the glass of tepid water in one fell swoop. “Don’t ask. I won’t tell.”

The waitress returned with her pad of green-and-white paper, pen in hand. “What’ll you have?”

I smiled politely and looked down at the menu, going with the first thing I laid my eyes on. “I’ll have the bacon, eggs, and hashbrowns, please.”

She looked over at Beck with a raised eyebrow. “And you?”

“I’ll have the same.”

Once she was gone, I picked back up where I’d left off. “So, would it be okay if I used the safe house to do what I have to with Whitaker?”

Beck nodded. “This is highly unusual, but I don’t see why not.” He looked back outside to Whitaker and then dabbed his mouth with an overused napkin. “Look, the only reason I’m even here having this discussion with you and willing to help is your contact.”

I raised a brow. “Who exactly is that?”

“I wasn’t given the name of your contact, but whoever it is, they know people in high places.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“I got a call from Langley. One of the bigwigs called me directly at the safe house and requested that I come get you and do whatever is necessary to help complete your assignment.”

“Do you know anything about what I’m involved in over here?”

Beck paused as the waitress returned with our food.
