His hunch was correct.

While he and Genevieve were at lunch — he invited her to join him, seeing as she didn’t want to leave without her phone — the call from Charlie the IT Guy came through. Ricky was mid-bite of a personal pan pizza from the pizza shop closest to the DCU Center when his cell rang; he dropped his pizza right onto the box.

“It’s IT,” he told Genevieve as she, too, ate a slice of her own. She slid his finger across the screen and brought it to his ear. “What’s the good word, Charlie?”

“Good news. Your witnesses are in the clear, nothing deleted. None of the keywords found except on texts between them and the victims. Some rather risqué photos, though, on both. You want me to email those to you? I downloaded them.”

Ricky stiffened. He looked at Genevieve for half a moment, then back at the pizza. He felt fire flooding his face.

“No, that’s okay. And you delete that from your server while you’re at it.” Ricky cleared his throat; out the corner of his eye, he saw Genevieve raise a curious eyebrow as she chewed. “When can you submit a report on this?”

“And?” Genevieve added.

“And when can the witness get her phone back?”

“She’s still here?”

“I told you that she wasn’t leaving without it,” Ricky reminded.

“She can have it back when you get back, seeing as I can hear passing cars.”

“Yeah, we’re right outside. And everything is still intact on her phone?”

“Of course. We’re horny, nerdy men, not monsters.”

“OK, we’ll be down to get it as soon as we’re finished eating.” He hung up without another word and grabbed his almost forgotten slice. “So as I expected, you’re in the clear. We can go get your phone in a few minutes.”

Genevieve smiled and nodded as Ricky brought the slice toward his mouth.

“Good. I take it they liked my selfies.”

Ricky froze, the slice of pizza inches from his open mouth. He closed his mouth a second later and swallowed.

“They did say something about that, yes. And I apologize if they were lecherous fools.”

She waved it aside.

“Detective Madison, I’m a cam model,” she said. “I get naked for men and women around the world on the computer. It’s nothing many have seen already.” She kept eating.

“But not the police in your own community.” Ricky resumed eating. “We’re supposed to be upholding your privacy as it is, not catching a peek.”

“It’s nothing I’m worried about. I took those photos, I didn’t move them to my hard drive or to the cloud. Things happen and they saw them. It’s no big deal, really.”

The pair kept eating, even though Ricky felt guilt gnawing at him for the actions of the IT guys. He knew that some men didn’t care for the politically correct mannerisms of today’s society, and that included talking to other men about women in a derogatory fashion, making the workplace feel like a men’s locker room.
