Chapter 45

Emma Lenson

Good Samaritan Hospital

“You must have it wrong.” Emma stepped closer to the counter where the mousey-looking woman sat at a computer clicking away with her mouse. “He definitely wants to see me. I’m his girlfriend.”

Marnie turned back to Emma and held her hand out in frustration, but Emma ignored her. Leave it to Marnie to screw things up. The girl didn’t have an assertive bone in her body.

“I’m sorry, but it’s hospital policy.” Mousey pinched the tiny bauble dangling from her necklace. “Family only.”

Emma nudged in beside Marnie and placed her hands flat on the counter, her “Pretty in Pink” nail polish gleaming in the fluorescent overhead lights. “But we’re like family, and we came here just to see him.” She pointed to the big double doors with square windows in the top half. “Is he in there, or not?”

The nurse stopped clicking on her computer and cocked her head at Emma. Her pursed lips and stern eyes were so obvious; she wasn’t even trying to hide her annoyance.

Well, if Emma had her mousey brown hair and beady eyes, she supposed she’d be annoyed, too.

“What was the patient’s name again?” the woman asked. She reached for the charm on her necklace and ran it back and forth on the chain, like a two-year-old revving toy cars on a track.

Emma folded her arms, satisfied to be making progress. “McGann. Benjamin McGann.”

Nurse Mousey typed on the keyboard.

“And I’m Emma Lenson. Of the Lenson family. I’m sure you’ve heard of Lenson Crystal.”

The woman didn’t even look up at Emma, just kept her BB eyes on the computer screen. What was wrong with her? Did she drink out of jelly jars?

“Okay, we do have a patient named Benjamin McGann, but he’s just out of surgery. There are no visitors allowed in the ICU.” Mousey squeezed the charm again and started running it back and forth, back and forth, until Emma wished the woman would pull too hard and break the necklace. “Sorry.”

The way she cut Emma off, zipping her little charm…Emma sucked in a breath, fanning the fury. “I don’t think so. I don’t think you’re sorry at all.”

“Emma…” Marnie cut in. “Come on.”

But Emma wasn’t going to be pacified. “I want to see my boyfriend. He needs me.”

“Hospital policy,” Nurse Mousey said without looking up.

“Well, at least can you tell me how he’s doing? What happened in his surgery? Is he going to be okay?”

“I can’t give that information out, young lady. A patient is legally entitled to privacy of records.” And then Nurse Mousey had the gall to wheel her chair around to the desk behind her and face away from the counter, her back to Emma and Marnie.

“The drama queen thing isn’t going to fly,” Marnie said, gesturing her away from the counter. “We need to go to plan B.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I have to see Ben. I am freaking out here, and that one just spouts off hospital policy.”

“That one is enjoying your freak-out.” Marnie flipped open her cell phone and pressed out a number.
