Chapter 23

Tyler

After doing some errands, I headed home just as the sun started going down. That's also when I noticed a commotion over at the inn. It looked like there were dozens of people inside. What the hell?

I felt a flash of worry and hurried over. Once inside, I had to weave my way through a crowd gathered outside where new Adirondack chairs were set up with little tables. It looked nice.

I made my way to the front door and threw it open. There were people everywhere. And the place was filled with the smell of pie. Okay, now it was starting to make sense. People in town had been clamoring for Meg's pies for years. But what exactly was going on?

To my left there was a table with slices of pie on it and people milling around. I got closer, hoping to grab a piece.

When I finally extended my hand, it was gently slapped away. Anger rose inside of me. I couldn’t see past the line of pie grabbers to see who it was. Who had had the audacity to stop me from eating pie?

Then I saw that it was a smirking Zoe. Maybe it was the tight red sweater she was wearing that gave me an instant hard on, or the mischief that danced in her eyes as she looked up at me, but despite how irritating she was, every day I wanted her more.

"I'm sorry, Tyler," she said, not sounding sorry at all. "But Pie Happy Hour is for paying customers only. If you want some pie, there are some whole pies for sale over there."

She pointed to the front desk and then waved to Meg, who winked at her knowingly and waved back.

"Pie Happy Hour?" I had to admit, it was smart. Really smart. When I turned to take in the rest of the lobby, there were at least a dozen people scattered around eating pie slices.

I did the math in my head. It had been years since there were this many people spending the night at the inn, even during Spring Festival. But it was early, and the festival hadn't even started yet.

The line to buy pies snaked almost all the way out the door. I stepped over to the front desk, and as I did the customers in line cast wary eyes in my direction.

"What's going on, Meg?"

"Can't talk right now, kinda busy." She was grabbing pies in tins off of a long folding table set up behind her and ringing them up as fast as she could.

Sam was at the front of the line. He waved. I waved back. He was buying three pies.

A small sign in front of Meg clearly stated that three pies was the limit. And judging by the size of the line and the number of pies on the table, people were going to leave disappointed.

I leaned in to whisper. "Can you save me one?"

"No way," Meg answered quickly, "this crowd is going to get surly when I run out as it is.
