Lucas woke up at around 4 am, sweating. He’d dreamt he was in a tent, the same tent where the young girl’s body had been discovered. A knife was in his hand, and he’d had her tied up. He’d stabbed her and cut her over and over and over. Blood pumping, splashing everywhere. He’d slipped in it, his face smeared as he kept stabbing and stabbing. Music was pumping in the background, the bass reverberating through him as he was filled with a feeling of euphoria, the sense of being in total control; the power was incredible. It felt so good.

And then he’d woken up, terrified, drenched in sweat. He couldn’t get back to sleep after that, so he’d left Chloe in the bed, showered, dressed and headed into the station to get a head start. He’d left a note, hoping she didn’t mind that he hadn’t woken her.

He arrived at about ten past six to find the office eerily quiet. Only a couple of other people were milling about, drinking coffee and looking at computer screens.

Coffee was a good idea, so he re-boiled the kettle and made himself a cheap instant coffee, which tasted like rats piss, and sat at his desk. There was a folder on it, which contained all the information they had on the person behind their mysterious Twitter handle. They’d put together a profile, but there was little to go on. It was the usual stuff. The person had set up the account in 2010 and they’d used an email address from a Gmail account that matched the handle. There were no clues to their identity. They’d sent no message, never tweeted, and hadn’t done anything other than follow six of the seven victims and a host of British news outlets. None of the IP addresses they’d traced had yielded anything, and they couldn’t pinpoint the account owner’s exact location because of a sophisticated VPN. They didn’t have the power or the resources to hack into Gmail or learn more about the person behind the account. It was frustrating. He’d have a chat with Carmichael. They’d need more people working on it, and he’d want to have a word with the digital forensics department and see what they could come up with.

Chloe arrived a few hours later in a similar state of dishevelment to the previous morning.

‘Good morning,’ she said, yawning and stretching up at the ceiling.

‘Good morning. I hope you don’t mind that I didn’t want to wake you. I had a shit night’s sleep,’

‘Don’t worry about it. You look shattered. Do you want me to get you a coffee?’

‘I need something stronger than the muck I’ve just had from the tin. I’ll get us something from the canteen.’

‘No, it’s OK, I’m up, I’ll get it.’ She left her jacket over the back of the chair and walked to the door. She had a pleasant walk, and her tight professional trousers today did a lot for her. Lucas wasn’t a bad-looking bloke, but he could never see why someone like Chloe would go for someone like him.
