CHAPTER 25
It was no understatement to say that Aydinâs mind was in turmoil as he drove away from the mosque, and it wasnât just because heâd had to sit through an address in honour of a man who heâd killed the night before. The fact was, on each of the last few days now, Aydin had spent several hours either in the mosque or the community centre that accompanied it, far more time than he spent in his home mosque back in London where heâd been working long hours for months on end, and where heâd never really warmed to the lacklustre Imam. Here, though, Imam Ibrahim ⦠Aydin struggled with the comparison somewhat, but Ibrahim reminded him of his Imam Hadid back at the Farm.
Horrific memories to dredge up at any point.
Yes, the years spent there, largely under the cruel tutelage of Aziz Al-Addad, were the darkest and most painful of Aydinâs dark and painful life, but heâd always held respect for the Imam during his time there. A man whoâd not just taught Aydin about Islam, but whoâd guided him through his formative years.
Since his escape from that place, Aydin had long considered whether the Imam at the Farm really was good and moral, or whether that impression of him was simply because he was such a stark contrast to the other far more oppressive elders there. Having only spent a few days with Ibrahim, Aydin realised it was probably worse than that. Imam Hadid at the Farm was, in all likelihood, simply a wolf dressed in sheepâs clothing. In his own kindly and fatherly way heâd helped to show Aydin and the other boys at the Farm down a path of violence and hatred, all wrapped up as if it was Godâs will. Yes, heâd done so in a smooth and caring and comforting manner, as opposed to Al-Addadâs brutishness, but nonetheless his purpose and presence at that place had been clear.
Despite all that, in Aydinâs mind, he still felt warmth at the thought of the conversations and the debates that he had had with Imam Hadid about Islam, and about life. A warmth that he was once again feeling with Imam Ibrahim.
Surely he couldnât be blinkered again after everything heâd been through?
Aydin shook the conflicting thoughts from his head. He didnât have the time to dwell now. He checked his mirrors then pulled the newly rented Chevrolet Cruze off the main road and into the car park for the Islamic Center of America. The car park for the mosque was equally as huge as the building it served, though mid-afternoon during the week, in between prayer times, it wasnât even a fifth full. Aydin parked the Cruze in the middle of the spaces, near to another cluster of cars, and facing away from the mosque and towards the neighbouring apartment block known as St Sarkis Towers.
Of course, he could have parked closer to the apartments â his destination â but if this went wrong, the last thing he wanted was for his car to be parked right outside and visible to witnesses.
