Several weeks later on a Thursday morning, as I’m waiting for the lift, a group of three women I recognise but don’t know, giggle their way up to wait with me, dripping small puddles on the polished floor.

“I mean, I know I shouldn’t, but damn is he hot!”

I glance behind them, through the window and at the pouring rain, then back to the floor that’s quickly becoming a lake.

“And rich too. But he doesn’t have that snobby thing going on that most of them have.”

“Not yet maybe. And I’m going to make the most of it.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah. I’m going to ride that train as long as he’ll let me.” She laughs again, setting them all off like twittering birds.

“You know it won’t last, right? He’s banged his way through three departments in the last two weeks.”

“I know. But...” She lowers her voice. Unfortunately, not low enough. “I’ve heard the reviews. There’s no way I’m missing out on that. And who knows? Maybe he’s just looking for the right woman to settle down with.”

“And you think you could be her?”

“Mrs Carly Carnell. Has a nice ring to it.”

I’m going to take the stairs. All twenty something flights. And remove my own ears.

I can still hear them, giggling and jabbering, as I walk away, teetering on my heels whilst hoping I don’t slip.

“He’s taking Michelle to Paris. She hasn’t stopped talking about it.”

“That’s just a work thing.”

That evening, having read Seth’s curt email about wanting to donate more than originally agreed upon to his brothers’ charity and his updated itinerary for his field trips that he definitely no longer requires my help with, I watch him leave with the annoying woman from the foyer. Then I grab my jacket with my hotel bar in mind.

He doesn’t need me at all now. He’s taken over almost every aspect of the project himself and I can’t fault a word of it.

His business plan is well thought out and innovative. His pitch is perfect. His product is now so slick it pretty much sells itself. And he won’t let me near it.

Everything I suggest, he’s thought of. Each time I ask about the next steps, he’s two ahead. And I am redundant in every aspect of his life. Which is why I agreed to marry Ru.

‘It makes sense,’ my head says. The issue seems to be that my heart has discovered it has an opinion, and far too much influence over my head to allow me to set a date. I feel like I’m being torn in two. I am aching for a man I can’t have. The man I was always supposed to have is right here. Saying all the right things. But it still feels wrong.

“Ellie.” Dez smiles, flashing his gold tooth as he holds open the door for me, a taxi ride later.

“Thank you.” I return his smile politely and try to keep my pace somewhere below an indecent haste as I hurry towards the alcohol. The barman, Eddie, has already spotted me and begun pouring a double on his side of the dark wood veneer dotted with glowing tea lights.
