The next evening Peter arrived just as I was pulling dinner from the oven. I had decided on parmesan and herb crusted salmon with roasted asparagus and garlicky couscous. A simple meal that always looked and tasted more impressive than it was.

Peter settled himself on a barstool at the island with a glass of wine while I plated our food.

“Where are all of your roommates this evening?” he asked as he sipped the wine.

“My parents are at some work function for my mom. She works for a big accounting firm and they have ‘customer appreciation’ events.” I paused my plating to emphasize this with air quotes. “Every few months. Really, I think they are all just so bored out of their minds running numbers every day that they just want an excuse to get drunk and cut loose.”

Peter laughed. “Who could blame them?”

“Right?” I responded with a grin. “Luckily I’m not responsible for getting them home safely tonight. Benji kindly volunteered for that duty this evening.”

I turned with a plate in each hand and moved to join him at the island. I may have imagined it, but I swore I saw him tense at the mention of Benji’s name. I slid a plate in front of him and poured myself a glass of the wine.

After eating I tidied the kitchen and the two of us found ourselves nestled together on the sofa with refreshed glasses of wine in our hands.

We had ended up here under the premise that we would find a movie to watch but instead we were simply enjoying conversation and neither of us had so much as attempted to find the remote control or turn on the television.

Finally, Peter suggested we play a game instead.

“Would you rather?” he suggested and with a low groan I agreed.

“You’re as bad as Carly wanting to play these party games!” I teased.

“You start,” he said with a smirk.

“Hm… okay. Would you rather…” I tapped my finger against my lips as I considered. “Be fired from your job or have your car repossessed?”

“Oh, the car. Definitely the car,” he responded with zero hesitation.

I gasped. “But your credit score!”

He shrugged, his smirk widening, “Can be rebuilt! Being fired will follow you around for your entire career.”

“Sure, unless you plan to work for yourself. As my own future employer, I’m not concerned about my employment record.”

“But your credit
