Dressed and ready to restart her search for Belcher, Lexi leaned over Nita in bed, kissing her forehead instead of waking her to say goodbye. But her plan didn’t work. Nita fluttered her eyes open, blinking at the morning light filtering through the plantation shutters. She hooked an arm around Lexi’s neck to prevent her from pulling back. “What time is it?”

“Eight. I asked the team to regroup at ten.”

Nita released her hold and raised her torso to lean against the headboard. “Do you have any leads?”

“Not yet, but Belcher is becoming more unhinged. He’ll make a mistake and show his hand. And when he does, my team will be there.”

“Go. I won’t feel safe until Belcher is dead.”

Lexi sat on the edge of the mattress and wiped away a strand of unruly hair from Nita’s face. She wasn’t buying for one minute that Nita was okay with her leaving. She was more concerned about Nita repeatedly rubbing the arm tattoos hiding her track marks, suggesting Nita was more nervous about her addiction than Belcher.

“You may not believe it right now, but you’re stronger than you realize. Until you do, please consider calling Wyatt today. He can help you in ways that I can’t.” Nita had been vague about her sponsor’s addiction history, as she should, but she’d also said they’d been on similar paths. If anyone could help Nita over this hump, Wyatt could.

Kissing her goodbye was the hardest thing Lexi had ever done. Defusing a bomb. Coming back from losing a leg. Saying goodbye to Noah in the bowels of the Gladding missile complex when she’d thought there was no escape. It all paled to leaving Nita when she faced the fight of her life.

Arriving downstairs, Lexi discovered the Keene kitchen bustling this Monday morning. Amanda prepared sack lunches at the counter near the sink. Two high schoolers and a fourth-grader scarfed down pancakes and eggs at the island breakfast nook. And Maxwell and her mother sipped coffee while reading newspapers old school at the round breakfast table behind them.

Lexi kissed her mother on the forehead, noting she looked haggard. “How’s the noggin?”

“It’s much better. Sleeping helps.” Her mother and Nita were much alike, putting on brave fronts to avoid being a burden. She put down her paper, grabbed her empty plate, and pushed herself up, but Lexi applied gentle pressure on her shoulder to force her into her seat.

“I got it.” Lexi snatched the plate from her mother’s hand. “I’m glad you’re feeling better, but please don’t argue about getting more sleep. You look tired.”

“Maybe you’re right.”

“Will miracles never cease?” Her mother’s laugh was a good sign, but Lexi was worried the head injury was more severe than she’d first thought. She walked the plate to the sink and whispered into Amanda’s ear, “I’m worried about Mom. Can you make sure she gets more sleep and check on her from time to time?”

“Of course.” Amanda finished stuffing the homemade sandwiches into lunch sacks. “How did Nita sleep? Maxwell told me Belcher’s men overdosed her with heroin.
