T an relaxed as he rolled the dough into a flat shape, which he would later divide into rectangles to bake flatbreads. Kudos to his mother, who had at least indulged his interest in things like cooking, baking, and all kinds of crafts projects. Hell, he could cross-stitch like a motherfucker, and he could knit a mean sweater if he had to. He’d been tailoring all Doug and Ruthie’s clothes so they’d fit the three of them, hemming for himself and combining multiple garments to sew ones that suited Austin’s tall frame. Mack was easy with his standard size.

He didn’t mind this kind of household work. It provided an unfamiliar sense of satisfaction, feeling like he was taking care of his men. He’d felt the same way about caring for Mack when he’d been bedridden. Tan had spoon-fed him, washed him, helped him pee in a bottle the way Mack had done when Tan had gotten hurt. He couldn’t explain it, but he felt good doing these things.

In fact, and his hands stopped working the dough for a moment as the realization hit him, he was happy . How the fuck was that possible in the midst of a war, a siege, a constant threat to their lives? Yet he was. He was happier than he’d ever been, living a simple, domestic life with his men.

You know this won’t last. It never does.

Of course it wasn’t perfect. It couldn’t be, not under these circumstances. They’d started rationing food a bit stricter. Meat, they still had enough of, feasting on big steaks and stew or hearty soup made from the tougher cuts. Mack’s method of preserving it in the ground had worked wonderfully so far, and with the snow, it would stay frozen even longer. But they’d limited their portions of everything other than meat and eggs. Their supplies had to last them through the winter and possibly beyond that.

They’d found a middle ground for their heating challenge, closing off the living room and only using the kitchen—which could be kept reasonably warm by firing up the stove—and the bedroom, where they also used hot water bottles to warm up their bed. Tan had come up with the idea to use water bottles when he’d found metal ones that were suitable for cold and hot liquids. It had worked brilliantly, and Tan had been proud he’d contributed with something useful.

Maybe that’s why he felt happy. He felt useful, appreciated, and that was certainly new. There was harmony, an easygoing friendship between the three of them. They talked, they laughed, they made jokes and told stories. They’d even played some board games: Monopoly, Ticket to Ride, and Risk—though the latter had lasted too long to keep Tan’s interest.

The only thing missing was something he couldn’t bring up, something that was unfair to complain about. He’d debated it, but he’d sound petty and ungrateful, and that wasn’t what he wanted. But he missed it. And the three weeks Mack had been healing had been even worse because there had been…nothing.
