She didnât.
But she took him back through the portal and swam up the ocean, filling his lungs with air, making sure they reached the ship at the exact same moment that sheâd saved him.
âLorelei,â he gasped, as the water quickly turned cold around again him.
She took the warmth with her when she turned to go; she couldnât afford it if another human saw her. The screams made her insides twist in a way they hadnât before. She wanted to leave right this second. But her name on his lips⦠She turned around, cursing.
She saw him floating there, bobbing up and down with the waves, his head silhouetted by the shipâs failing lights. Darius. He wasnât just a dying man now, another victim of the sea. She knew him. He was hers. Wet lips, shining eyes, shaking teeth.
âWhat?â
âIâm sorry I didnât get a chance to die for you, too,â he murmured.
Stupid human.
She gave a push with her tail, and surfaced next to him, her wet curls floating in the inky waters around his already stiff body. âIf thatâs your way of telling me you care for me, Brown Eyes,â she said, âthen you need to find a better one.â
With that, she leaned in, and breathed all the air she could into him, filling him up to the brim. She felt it as her strength entered his body, felt his vitality return inside him, even if it would be only for a few seconds.
When she let him go, he floated there, making no move to swim away from the breaking ship, staring into her face as if heâd entirely lost his mind. She muttered a curse. She flicked her wrist and a piece of floating debris, a large piece of wood that could easily support him, came to her obediently on the waves.
âHere.â She placed his hands on it and dragged him onto the wood so that the majority of his body would be out of the cruel water. âFor Seidonâs sake, hold on.â
He nodded, lucidity returning to his eyes, and she took his chin in her fingers, not caring who saw. âIf you really want to show me you care for me, even a tiny little bitâ¦â It was hard to breathe, and not because of the cold. âIf you want me to see this love you say will melt me⦠Then this is how Iâll know: Promise me you wonât die again.â
âI will, someday.â His teeth were chattering, and his eyes were pouring water again. He was crying. For her.
In the distance, someone started screaming his name in a voice thick with water. She had to get out of there. Now.
âWell, it sure as Seidon wonât be today,â she said, and disappeared into the black waters.
