They stared at each other warily, glumly. Powell shifted his stance, cast a longing look at the cushy king-size bed. Lydia, having just completed her nighttime ritual, had emerged from the master bath wearing fresh pajamas and a determined frown.
They circled each other, Lydia with her arms crossed, Powell with his hands jammed in his jeans pockets, like two people playing musical chairs. Both kept one eye on the prized bed and the other on the competition.
âI have to work tomorrow,â Powell said. âI need a decent nightâs sleep.â
âI have two jobs ahead of me,â Lydia countered. âI need sleep twice as much as you do.â
âYouâll be here all day. You can take a nap.â
âIâll be working all day, taking care of the kids with one hand and faxing conference reports with the other.â
âI have to get up at six to be at work by seven.â
âI have to get up at live-thirty to get closing figures. for the Asian stock markets.â
They circled the room again like hungry wolves eyeing a deer carcass.
âWe could flip for it,â Powell said.
âNo.â
âWhy not?â
âThereâs a fifty percent chance of losing.â
âThereâs a fifty percent chance of winning.â
âI donât like the odds.â
Powell heaved a sigh, pulled his hands from his pockets and jammed them on his hips. âWell, Iâm not sleeping on the sofa.â
âNeither am I.â She studied him, studied the bed. It really was huge. Soft. Comfortable. And that squishy down comforter was to die for. âOkay, these are the rules.â
Powell tilted his head hopefully.
âOne, pajamas are required, both top and bottom.â
He frowned, but nodded.
âTwo, no encroaching on the center line.â
âokay.â
âThree, somnambulistic groping is not allowed. No excuses.â
He hiked a brow. âThat goes for you, too, right?â
She didnât dignify that with a response. âAnd four, last one up makes the bed.â
âAwwââ
âTake it or leave it.â
âIâll take it.â
A deal was struck, and the deed was done.
This wasnât the first compromise the intimacy of their living arrangements had required. It wouldnât be the last. It was, however, the most significant. Lydia hoped she wouldnât regret it.
