Chapter 13

Beckham

The plans have been set and ready for weeks. The festival tent is ready to be set up. The cakes, cupcakes, cookies, pies, and turnovers are baked, packaged, and ready. When it comes to the Bardstown Fall Festival, Hadley is a pro. She runs a tight ship, gives everyone their orders, crosses every t and dots every i. Dad made a great move by hiring her. I’m continually impressed, and not just because I think she’s hot.

In years past I was working at Wood’s during the Fall Festival and the bar would be packed from early afternoon until we closed at one in the morning, but I have a few memories of helping my dad at the festival before I was old enough to work.

“Dad, do I have to keep doing this? I’m sweatin’ like one of Mr. Hill’s pigs. How many more crates and boxes are there?”

“Beck, we’re not finished until we’ve taken everything out of the back of the truck and set it up here for the day,” Dad explains. “If we leave things in the truck, they’re not secure and they’ll sit in the hot sun all day. If that happens, then all our hard work is ruined. Come on, it should only be a couple more trips.” He hands me another crate filled with loaves of apple cinnamon bread to carry into the tent.

“Why can’t Graham help? Or Emmett?”

“Your brothers are a little too young to help with this stuff, Beck. Don’t worry, they’ll all have jobs too. Even little Asher. But you’re old enough to be trusted not to drop things on the ground all the time because you’re getting bigger and stronger every day.”

I stand a little taller when Dad tells me how strong I’m getting. The excitement in me grows. “Mr. Myers says my swing is getting stronger too.”

“I don’t doubt it. You keep up the hard work and you’ll be a leader on that team come spring training time.”

A smile spreads across my face. “You think so? You think Coach will make me Captain?”

Dad puts his two crates down and stands tall to look at me. “Beckham, I think you can do anything you put your mind to. If being the team captain is important to you, then by God, you shoot for it. You work out and practice every day and there’s no doubt in my mind you’ll get the position. But keep in mind that good leaders don’t put their focus on their title. They care more about the members of their team because as strong as you may be personally, it’s your job to offer your hand to your team members and lift them up. Any way you can. You do those things, and it will never matter to your mother or me what your title is. Being helpful and kind and hardworking…those are measures of a good man.”

“Okay Dad.” I nod. “I hear what you’re saying.”

He claps me on the shoulder. “Good. Come on. One last trip. And then maybe we can take a quick break and grab an ice-cream cone over at the Dairy Food Truck.
